I have my first appointment coming up at UNC.  So what's the first appointment like... is it a typical specialist first appointment where you basically make other appointments or is it pretty detailed.

Since I had my surgery at Duke, I'm not sure of the process at UNC, but hopefully someone else who had theirs there will be able to answer how they handle things. I know that at Duke, I had a bunch of appointments ganged together so I saw the nurse first who took down all of the vitals and history. Then I saw the RNP who talked to me about my goals, medical history, etc... and answered many of my questions. After that I saw the psychologist and then had an appointment with the registered dietician that works with the group. The first appointment with my surgeon didn't come until later. I know that UNC has smaller, more intimate program, so I can't speak to how they handle their appointments. I would suggest that you consider writing down your questions and leave space to write in the answers you get. You'll be getting a great deal of information and sometimes it is hard to process it all and remember all of the details.

Wishing you all the best,

I also had my appointment at Duke it's been approx  2 weeks ago.
I went into the office, spoke with Dr's assistant.  Then the nutritionist came in and I spoke with him. Then the Dr and the assistant came in and I spoke with both of them. Then I was brought back to the lab where they took my blood. I was then taken to lobby waited 15 mins and was called back to speak with phys doctor. Then I was given an appt for a week later (I went last week) to go to hospital to have EKG, barium swallow and chest xray. If everything is well, I should be getting a call with my surgery date. (By the way, in case your interested.... the barium swallow is not that bad.)

Good luck
