VSG- State health plan
Has anyone here had the VSG approved by the BCBS State health plan? I currently have the Lap band and I and looking to have revision surgery to the VSG. I contacted my insurance company and they said that VSG is a surgery that they consider but i would not know for sure until everything is submitted. So I have been searching the forums and I can't find that anyone has had the VSG with my BCBS State health plan.
Also I am looking into having my Revision done with Duke and I submitted my application on Friday the 13th. I am wondering how long does it take to hear back from Duke???
Any information will greatly be appreciated. Thanks!

Hey Sheila,
I've heard of BCBS covering the VSG in special cases. Usually it's due to scar tissue or adhesions from previous abdominal surgeries. I was told it was a possiblity for myself as I have had a small bowel resectioning and have a lot of scar tissue. I've read up on both the RNY and the VSG so I'm ready either way. Good Luck with your revision.

I thought (and I could be wrong) but Duke only preforms the RNY and lap band. At least that's what I understood when I attended the seminar back in May. Maybe things changed? Also, when I went to my first appt yesterday, they asked me if I was interested in the RNY or lap band no mention of VSG.........unless something has changed.
When I spoke to Taylor yesterday and I asked her did they have a lot of people get revisied from the lap band to VSG and she told me yes. She just didn't know what insurances those particular people had. As I was looking on the website VSG was a surgery that Duke had listed but it was not an option on the application they sent me, so I penciled it in. They also listed the names of the Dr's who perform the procedure. Dr. Portenier, Dr. Pyror, Dr. Sudan, Dr. Torquati, and Dr. Yoo. Dr. Sudan is the only one that does the DS.
I would consider RNY but I take medications and I'm not sure if I could still take them after surgery with RNY. I am confused and not sure what I really want to do but I know I want to lose the weight!

Hey,
The VSG has not been approved in the US yet, causing insurance companies not to cover it unless the Dr. says it's the only option. It's being done in Europe daily. There are a few Drs. at Duke that have done the VSG and one who has quite a bit of experience. I've asked lots of questions at my original appointment with Dr. Pryor and my many phone calls to the nurse and managers. Everyone has their own favorite doctor for their own reasons. I chose Pryor because of her expertise as a surgeon and her patient/dr chemistry. My second choice would have been Dana Portinear, I have heard nothing but great things about him.
Hopefully you will hear something soon.
