My husband was laid off 17 months ago and we loose our cobra insurance Aug 31st.  I am scheduled for Rou-N-Y on Aug 23rd.  Yes, that in itself is scarry to have surgery so close to the end of insurance coverage.  I just have to trust God that all will be ok!  But here is my question.  We are getting quotes for private insurance as my husband still has not been able to find a job with benefits and I was told by a BCBS rep today that ANYBODY that has had bariatric surgery cannot get private medical insurance and he has referred me to a High Risk Pool called Inclusive Health...and of course non of my doctors are listed...not even my surgeon!  HAs anyone else experienced this???  Is anyone else covered under the NC High Risk pool???

I am without medical insurance for a year and a half now and I had the surgery nearly two years ago. Same reason as yours DH was laid off in March of '09. We had to choose between paying rent or our Cobra and rent won so we lost ours nearly right away. What I do is study hard about all the things I need to do to stay healthy and if I need to see a doctor I tell my doctor right up front about the fact that I have no insurance and believe it our not they have better rates for non-insured and even the labs are rated differently. So I would just put the money you currently are spending to pay for your cobra into a savings account and then use that money as needed to visit the docs and for follow-ups. Surprisingly if you make the effort to follow the rules and stay healthy you may even come out ahead. The most expensive part is thankfully covered. And that is the surgery itself. Good luck.
