Alimentary Hypoglycemia

So I've discovered I have what's called 'Alimentary Hypoglycemia'.

In everything I've studied up on this is associated with dumping syndrome (which I don't have) and with gastric surgeries, gastrectomy, etc.

Basically what's happening is that I have to eat EVERY TWO HOURS: on the dot.  I had to go a half hour over this morning because of work and my sugar got so low I was having symptoms.

My plan to attack this is to increase my protein levels at each little meal and see how that helps.  I'm not eating simple sugars or simple carbs because it's not really my thing (and I'm still on soft foods).

I've got an appointment on Monday and I'll be talking to them about it.  I mean, this isn't life threatening or anything, it's just obnoxious to have to always worry about packing snacks and stuff wherever I go and to be living by a clock with the eating.  I want to think less about eating, not more.

Anyway, just a venting... thanks.

Dear Satya,

I had the RNY instead of the DS, but had some similar issues and the only thing that I can tell you is that it improved as my new intestinal tract matured. Adding protein did seem to help me and I hope the same for you.

Please do let us know how you progress and if you have any further insight or information regarding your hypoglycemia.

I'm almost 3 years post op and my A.L. is getting worse. I have more hypo episodes.  And it is life threatening.  You can go into a coma if it goes too low.  Or have an accident if it drops while you are driving.  Please be careful.

Hi,

It comes and goes.  It depends quite a bit on whether I'm eating crap or concentrating on protein, and I eat every 2-3 hours regardless.  A lot of it as far as I'm concerned is about advance planning; eating the right stuff, making sure I stop what I'm doing and eat when I feel the need to and knowing what my body's telling me.  I've been teaching this stuff to patients for 15 years and now I'm having to learn it myself :)  But basically, as long as I'm sticking to my schedule things go all right.  The other day I had to go to work 4 hours early (3AM) and I did have a bit of an episode, nothing major, but enough for me to go 'okay, gotta eat'.  So it seems to be just a matter of getting familiar with how I feel and what that means.  And packing A LOT of things in my lunchbox!!

:)
