Newbie in Washington, NC
I'm Jessica, and I had my RNY a little over a week ago (5/20/10.) So far so good, besides being sick of protein shakes!
I'm a nurse at PCMH in Greenville (where I had my surgery) but I'm from Washington, NC (originally from Aurora, NC, but no one knows where that is!) I joined here a long time ago, when I first started considering surgery, but I've just started posting. It's so nice to find somewhere to help with the tons of questions I have!
Hi Jessica,
Welcome to the forum and congratulations on your recent surgery. Thank goodness that the protein shakes are only necessary for a while. If I never see one again, I'll be fine with that; however many find ways to enjoy them and do so for many years.
Please do come by often and post your questions, concerns, observations, etc... You will find that this group is really very supportive.
I look forward to getting to know you and watch your metamorphosis unfold.
All the best,
Barbara

My name is Amy and I am a newbie, too. I had my RNY on Tuesday (5/25/10). I agree about being tired of protein shakes! I have to keep thinking of the phases as steps towards my healthy weight.
I grew up in Robersonville and went to Roanoke HS, but live in Wilmington now. I teach 5th grade just across the bridge in Leland. I do know where Aurora is! My sons and I love to go to the fossil pit and dig! It is a few hours for us, but we have been up several times.
Other than sick of shakes, are you feeling OK? I got home from the hospital Wednesday night and slept in the recliner, but since Thursday night, I have been back in my own bed. Last night was the best night's sleep I have had since.
We may have some of the same questions for these experienced RNYer's on here. :-)
The fossils are fun! They just had the Fossil Festival this past weekend, you should come out next year! I bet your kids would love it! I managed to go walk around a bit and not feel too tired!
Other than the shake burn out, I'm feeling pretty good! I had the same issues sleeping, and STILL can't turn over to my left side yet, just too sore. I also have a wierd soreness on my left lower side, well under that biggest incision. Not sure what that's all about but my follow up is tomorrow morning. I'm only a few days from pureed foods! Who'd have thought I'd be so excited about sugar free pudding and cottage cheese! lol
Since your husband is from Oak City, did he go to Roanoke, too? If so, what year? I have 2 sisters younger than me. I was 1989, Karen was 1993, and Kelly went to Robersonville Jr. High through 8th grade before my parents moved to Texas.
Roanoke had its last graduation this past week as Martin County Schools has consolidated to that Williamston and Jamesville are combining and Roanoke and Bear Grass are combining. Roanoke will now be called South Creek.
My post-op is tomorrow, and I am ready to get these staples out. I have been pretty lucky in terms of pain. I haven't needed anything for about the last 4 days. I am having some bits of depression wondering if I have done the right thing. I just keep trying to remember that I am just in a phase right now. It will get better!
I am already sick of protein shakes and big chewable vitamins. I went to several bariatric websites and ordered samples so I can tell what I like better.
I feel like I have to work hard at it to get my fluids and protein. They told me I wouldn't be hungry, but I am not that thirsty, either, so I am having to make myself drink.
Have you felt that way, too?
I didn't get staples, I had dermabond glue stuff and it itches like CRAZY. I had one incision that seeped irrigation fluid for 3 days (started right after the surgery,) and now it's kind of hard, so I'm a little anxious to have him see it.
I'm feeling the same!! mostly I'm excited that I'm going to finally be happier/heathier, but at this point, I still wonder if this was the right thing to do. i'm so sick of the chewable calcium. I'm almost gagging to get them down by now, but I'm still doing it. i've just found very few calcium citrate brands, which is what I was told specifically to take. Which vitamins are you trying? I bought 2 different kinds that were recommended by the nutritionist, and both are okay, but I'd love to find one I don't have to take FOUR of and I'd still get what I need.
I'm also having trouble getting my protein and water, but I'm forcing it at the moment. I'm not at all thirsty, either, and I'm usually a big water drinker (usually 10 glasses or so a day.) I'm just constantly sipping to try to get it all in. I'm a liIttle concerned going back to work. I'm not sure how I'll get enough water in when I'm busy and I'm almost certain I'll have trouble getting in enough protein when I'm lucky to get one 30minute lunch break. I guess I'll have to see!
Sounds as though you are feeling well after your surgery, other than the protein shakes. I have not had my surgery yet, but June 4th is approching and I am excited. I have been drinking Atkins shakes to lose a few pounds prior to surgery, and have found that I like the Vanilla the best as it reminds me of snow cream. I look forward to your updates and hope you share food ideas on your different phases.
I too know where Aurora is as I have lived in NC all my life. The school my daughter attends buillt a fossile pile and filled it with the sand and such from Aurora, the kids love it, as it is like a treasure hunt.
Have a great day, and you will make it through the protein shake phase and continue to forward as the numbers on the scales drop!!!!! yippeee.....I am so looking forward to Friday.
