Hi! I'm at Camp LeJeune and I had surgery in November. I didn't have it here (I went back to TN for it), but I do know that there is an excellent surgeon in Wilmington (about 40 minutes away). I know a girl who had her RNY there in January and their program seems to be great.

Dr. MacDonald in Greenville with Southern Surgical is the best.  I had surgery in Dec. and I drove to greenville which is about 1.5 hours for appointments but he is the best.

Tricare only covers Lap Band or Rny...
There are some whom have had other surgeries but where done on bases that did them..
LeJeune is not a surgical hospital like that. So you will be seen out in town, and those are your choices is RNY or Lap Band. They just stared to cover Lap Band about two years ago? maybe three i could be wrong..

Hi Marie

Have you checked all your options? The VSG is one part of the DS. I was thisclose to going with Dr. Macdonald and the RNY from Southern Surgical, but he, nor his team, performs the DS. Matter of fact, his wls program doesn't even mention it as an option. I think that is very wrong for any doctor to not give his patients all their options, even surgeries he doesn't perform. That said, Dr. Mac is an awesome doctor when it comes to what he does do; the DS isn't one of them and the VSG is only done 'when appropriate'. This is straight from his website:

There are several procedures that can be performed for weight loss. Southern Surgical Associates, in conjuction with our affiliated hospitals, have chosen to perform Laparoscopic and open gastric bypass, laparoscopic and open gastric banding surgery, and laparoscopic and open gastric sleeves (when appropriate). We also perform revisional bariatric surgery when necessary.

Click on "what operations do you perform" under faq. Not sure what they mean by "when appropriate".

I did all my pre-op testing through Southern Surgical and the staff is excellent. I found out about the DS through Obesity Help. It was exactly what I was looking for; I was not thrilled with the RNY or Lap Band either, especially when Dr. Mac stated if I could not exercise he would not do any surgery. (I have advanced arthritis so short walks is about all I can do) So with my 50 BMI, my other health problems, you can say I was glad I found out about the DS and went with it.

Not sure if you can appeal your insurance, but you can cross post on the VSG and DS boards to see if the veteran insurance gurus chime in with advice. Good luck to you and I hope it all works out just the way you want it to!

We have a great support group/ get together for people at all stages of weightloss surgery.  Even those who are just thinking about it and have lots of questions.  We meet once a month.  Keep an eye out on the NC board on OH for meeting announcements.  We usually meet at a restuarant in Jacksonville.
