Just started low carb diet

I just started the low carb diet that my doctor recommended before my surgery and I have to say I am failing miserably! Is it me or is everything on earth filled with millions of carbs. I am about to call it a day and just drink protein shakes until my due date.  Any suggestions?

Hi TJ -

It's a real learning curve. You'll find that you'll probably be on more of a low-carb diet after your surgery for at least the first year because you're going to consume protien first, carbs later ... if you have room ;-)

Just try again tomorrow.

I did Atkins a few years back, so the low carb was okay for me to start.  BUT..  I lived off of eggs, meat and cheese then.  I have to think more about it now because my little tummy won't handle everything.  :)  Especially meat.   How long do you have to do the LC diet?  I did a 2 week liquid diet and survived quite well.  If you decided to do the shakes it would not be the worst thing you could do.  I could even send you a list of what I could/could not have on my 2 week diet.  The idea is to shrink your liver before surgery, so try hard!!!

Jennifer, I'd like to have it if you wouldn't mind sending me a copy. I'm interested to see what weight I could lose with it in addition to doing the exercises on the video that Cagair sent me!! Thanks!! Kelly :)

That would be great! I would really appreciate that. I am supposed to do it for two weeks before surgery.

Everything tasty has million of carbs ;-) Are you counting actucal carbs or net carbs? With net carbs you get a little more variety because you can subtract the fiber... all surgeons have different guidelines when it comes to the low carb diets! I would suggest searching recipies online and see what you can come up with... typically the first 2 weeks of any low carb diet is very limited... but at least there is some variety! Just keep sticking it with and keep your eye on the prize!

First visit to surgeon - 288 ~ bmi 45.1
2 week pre-op 252 ~ bmi 39.5

Current weight - 135 (2020 I lost 10lbs due to dedicating myself to working out more and being in better shape)

My surgeon also had me do a 2-week low (40 grms)-carb diet pre-op.  I did great with it because I have always been a big protein eater.  Don't be afraid to eat meat and fatty things for this diet.  It's maybe not where you will want to go post-op, but it's ok for this purpose, which is to shrink your liver by using up the glycogen reserves stored in there.  There was also the bonus of losing about 15 lbs while on that diet!  You can do this!  It's not forever!  And I second the suggestion that you check out recipes online.  Just prepare your menus in advance so you don't find yourself just grabbing anything.
