Sugar

Hey Sherrygirl!  As you progress through your journey you will find that you will get lots of information from your surgeon and nutritionist about how much sugar, carbs, etc. you can have.  My NUT advised that I stay below 8g of sugar when eating something.   Since you are working towards surgery, I would suggest seeking out a support group in your area.  I have learned  a lot here and a lot at my local support group.  Some of my RNY peers can eat a Snickers Bar.  I struggle with fruit.  Each person is so different!   Good luck on your journey!  We look forward to getting to know you!!!!!!!!

It is really important to listen to what your doctor and NUT says.  Everyone seems to have their on set of "rules".  For example, jennifer (above) can only have 8g of sugar per her NUT but mine said anything under 13g.  So it isimportant to do exactly what your team says.   I'm glad you said hello.  Welcome to the NC Board.  This is a great group of people and we all share things and it is so educational.  Good Luck on your new path.   Connie

Thanks for the good info and for the welcome!  I am excited/scared/nervous/etc. about the journey as well as making a lot of new friends.  Someone had said they chose the Lap Band b/c they might want a cupcake someday. (lol)  Wellllll, that scared the bejeebees out of me.  I am probably going to do the RNY surgery, so does that mean I will never ever again have anything sweet.  Oh Lord help me.  I don't care if it is sweetened with splenda or whatever, I just don't believe I can go forever and ever without a bite of something sweet.  But after hearing from you guys, it seems as though the NUT will help me those kind of things.  Thanks again for the info.   Merry Christmas !!! Sherry -

First of all, welcome to the NC Forum; we're glad to have you join us.

As Jennifer said, be sure to follow your Dr's guidelines. We all have such different protocols to follow. I am on of Jennifer's peers that can eat a Snicker's bar. I don't do it often, but dumping just is much of an issue for me at all. Honestly, it's not an issue for many post RNY patients ... about 60% ... but it can be and you need to be prepared. The dumping issue is a double edged sword; if you have it, you will not eat things you "should'nt" ... if you don't have it, you'll be able to indulge once in a while. I'm hoping that I can/will keep my behavior in control. I don't want to regain all that I've lost ... and I'd like to lose some more. Just today, I reached for a cookie, but I put it down. I decided that the brief enjoyment just wasn't worth the calories. I had a lovely cup of decaf coffee laced w/some sugar-free DaVinci syrup. I enjoyed and am not feeling deprived.

As Cagair said, you'll want to watch out for sugar alcohols, but you'll also be looking at protien and carb intake. Overall, you'll be much more cognizant of what you are injesting and it's impact on you after surgery, than you ever were before. With that, I find a sense of control that I never had before. I wish the same for you.

All the best in your journey.

Barb

Hi Barb, Thanks for the info.  That sugar-free DaVinci syrup sounds yummy.  Where do you get that? You are one of the lucky ones without the dumping, huh.  That is really good.  I know you are glad of that.  I just hope the sweet foods will lose some of their appeal. (lol)  I am an emotional eater and I know that I will miss the food.   Sounds like you are winning at the losing game!  CONGRATS!  Your photos are beautiful! Merry Christmas! Sherry
