3 Month Lab Results

I finally talked to one of the nurses at my Dr's office this morning to find out what my results were from my 3 month lab work. He said my results were all wonderful! He said that my Vit D levels were among the best he's seen for post-op patients and he could really tell I was taking my vitamins like I'm supposed to.  My only concern was my iron levels and he said they were well within the normal range! I'm so pleased that I could just burst! Iron suppliment is the only one I have  not been taking, but I've been eating like I'm supposed to and making sure I eat those red meats several times a week so I'm getting the iron that I need without the suppliments.  At any rate, I just wanted to share my good news! :D

Holley -

I'm delighted to hear that you are doing so well.

I also just got back from one of my Dr's. I have an genetic disorder that causes my body to store iron, so when I was looking at the surgical options one of the good things about RNY was the possible malaborption of iron. Good News! I seem to be malabsorbing the iron just fine! My numbers are good, not too high ... which is the worry for me.

It looks like this surgery has been a blessing to both of us.

Congratulations again on doing such a great job of taking care of yourself.

Warmly,

Barb

Thanks Barb.

I think it's very interesting that being able to absorb less iron is bennificial with your disorder. Double blessings for you! It's awesome how things work out for the best like that.

I have a genetic disorder called Hemochromotosis. It causes your body to store iron. Our bodies are supposed to use iron, but not store it. When we store iron, it litterally poisons all of our organs ... kidneys, liver, pancrease, brain, skin, bone marrow ... I could go on and on ... Ultimately, it can be fatal if not diagnosed and treated. The only real known treatment is phlebotomies (where they take a pint or so of blood****il your iron stores are depleated. It looks like I may have found another "treatment" since the body doesn't absorb iron as readily after the RNY, my body doesn't seem to be storing nearly as much iron as it used to. This was a "possible" benefit that my hemotologist and I discussed when I was trying to decide whether to have the RNY or the Lap-Band. It looks like the RNY is doing "it's job" for me in more ways than one; it looks like it may be keeping the deadly hemochromotosis in check for me. What a lovely side effect!?!

As you say, it's a double blessing for me.

That is great news.  Getting all of my vitamins in is one thing that concerns me.  Keep up the good work.

It was a huge concern for me as well. I finally stopped trying to put my vitamins away. I found that if I left them out on the kitchen counter where they were visible all the time, I wouldn't forget them.

Now I have a routine, I get up, pour me a glass of tea, stand in the kitchen and chew vitamins for 15 minutes while I wake up. I've gotten so used to the routine that if I have to break routine for whatever reason it throws everything off.

Keep trying to find a routine that works for you. Getting those vitamins in is very important.
