Warning about resturant eating..

... so you think you are making a healthy choice at a resturant - you may want to think twice!! This past Sunday I ate at Ruby Tuesdays. I ordered their turkey burger combo... it consists of two turkey "sliders" (those mini burgers) a side (I got veggies) and salad bar. I ate off the salad bar and took the turkey burgers and side home to eat for dinner Monday night.  Last night I didnt feel like eating them and had something else. When my BF got home from work I zapped the burgers for him. He took one bite and said they were AMAZING. I went and had a micro nibble of the meat off one and it was REALLY freaking tasty. Of course that set a bell off in my head that something must be on. I headed over to Ruby Tuesdays website to check the nutritional information... and I about fell out of my chair!!!!!! RT's turkey burgers AND bison burgers (which SHOULD be the LEANEST meat) were loaded with fat! Thank goodness I did NOT eat them... I *always* try and check a resturants nutritional information before I go but this was a last minute choice... learn from my almost mistake and check before you go. Here is a short run down of the nutritonal information - this does NOT include any side item or dipping sauce (like ketchup) at first I thought it was adding the burger AND fries because it was so high but NOPE! Mind you these are the PLAIN versions... they have ones with cheese/bacon etc. Calories/Fat of what you would think was "healthy food" Turkey Mini Burgers - 571/33 (the beef was 655/16!) Turkey Burger - 812/45 Bison Burger - 892/57 Veggie Burger 953/52 (freaking 52g fat in a VEGGIE burger? lawdy!)

Jennifer, This is unbelieveable. Just a couple of weeks ago I had 1/2 turkey burger at Ruby Tuesdays and thought how good it was.  Looks like that was 1/2 of my daily calories and a days worth of fat.  Thank you for sharing this.  I think I have made this mistake more than once.  I check out websites when I have time, but I do A LOT of last minute eating on the run.  This is motivation to PLAN MORE AND MORE!!! Thanks again for sharing...

Yeah... it makes me mad. Who would ever think the burger would be that high seeing how turkey is "suppose" to be so lean... same with the bison. They must be mixing the meat with something else or adding lard or something... who knows. There wasnt anywhere I could find the ingrediants for them. I guess its what keeps people comming back thou. Remember when RTs had nutritional info on their menus? They said they had a huge drop in sales so they took it off... guess people would just rather not know and be happy with what they are eating than know and make a healthier choice. The bite I had was REALLY tasty. I knew it had to be bad because of how delicious it was!

Hi Jenn- Thanks for a very informative post! I LOVE Ruby Tuesday's- but after carefully reading their Nut. Data online , after surgery- the ONLY thing I eat is their Jumbo Crabcake ( I eat 1/2 and save 1/2) and then a lean salad- I only put dressing on the side, so I can take home 1/2 the salad and it does not get mushy. It pays to spend an evening reading the Nut. data at your favorite restaurants. In general- I only eat burgers that I make and cook- then I KNOW their ingredients and Nut. eval. We all can learn from your experience! Girl- you are SO close to goal! Go Jenn! Sheila

Its the first time Ive eaten there since surgery!!! I sent them an email asking why the turkey and bison burgers are so fatty... hopefully I will get a 'real' answer and not something generic! I told them if I ever ate at their resturant again it would only be for the salad bar. I was impressed with the one I went to because it did have edamame and dried cranberries on it along with nutritional lettuces instead of the basi****burg. It is much better to eat at home... which I do as much as possible. I allow myself to eat lunch out once a week (usually with the girls!!) and do one dinner out with my BF. You just never know what they are sneaking in at these places!

Please let us know if you do get a reply from RT. I would love to hear where all the fat and calories are coming from. Thanks, Sheila

Jennifer -

You are soooo right. I have really been working on checking the nutrional info before eating out and it has saved my tail so far, but as you say even a seemingly "good" choice can be riddled with unexpected calories.

Thanks again for the heads up.
