Between my first weight in and my first visit with Dr. Mitchell I lost about 10 lbs. I tried so hard to lose the weight because I thought I would show him how serious I am about this surgery. When he read my weight print off it said, I lost something like 7 lbs. of water and gained 3 lbs. of fat. I was so upset over that and he said it's alright, we will show you how to lose it the right way. And he wants me to lose about 30 lbs. before surgery.

Well, it was over a month before I could get into the nutrition class to learn things the right way. I just found out that my surgery is scheduled for Nov. 6th. I have been so emotional through this process and dealing with knowing that I won't get to eat all my favorite junk anymore. If anything I have GAINED weight! Plus to top it off, between now and my surgery date, we are going on our first cruise. (It was booked over a year ago, before I knew about this surgery.) There is no way I can lose weight on the cruise. Then right after I get back I have to start my 2 week pre-op diet. I have fully committed to doing the 2 week diet and lose as much as I possibly can, but I know it's not going to be enough.

I feel like such a failure already and starting to question if I'm going to have the willpower for life after the surgery! Has anyone else went through this?  And has anyone's Dr. ever postponed their surgery date because they haven't lost enough weight yet?

Thank you!

If the doc wants you to lose weight its because he is concerned about your liver being too big. They have to move it out of the way to get to the stuff they have to work on, and this can complicate laproscopic surgery. It's usually not  "test" or anything to see if you can follow the diet, alot of people think that, but they do overestimate to get you working harder. Maybe you can get 20lbs off and he will be happy. I would call the nutritionist and tell them you're having a hard time, and maybe ASK the doc if he will cancel if you haven't lost the 30 lbs. You also may want to speak to someone about the anxiety you are feeling because you sure don't want to sabotage yourself.

Ask yourself this... is eating the food worth more to you then having this surgery? Its hard... but there are reasons the surgeon wants some of us to lose weight pre-op.... and it will help you out SO much post-op to have any additional weight off your body. Its easier for the surgeon to do surgery, you will be more healthy and have less risk of complications and your recovery should be better. It is hard to have the willpower but personally it took a lot for me to decide to have surgery and it was a LONG 9 months for me to go thru the process, get approval and a surgery date... I wouldnt have done anything to jeopardize myself pre-op and mess up the best thing thats every happened to me in my life. I would suggest sticking to whatever the nutritionist gave you to a T... save your "indugling" for the cruise... but keep yourself in check... you can enjoy yourself and enjoy eating on the cruise without overdoing it... it will be a matter of choice. Most cruises have a gym (I think - never been) so you could offset some of the additional calories with some simple walking. You dont have to lose weight on the cruise... I would focus on maintaining your weight and minimizing gaining. When you start the 2 week liquid pre-op most people lose anywhere from 10-25lbs... I lost 14lbs and I was a lightweight... so that will be a big chunk of what you need to lose. I would address your concerns with your Dr... let him spell it out so you know EXACTLY what he wants from you and what would be unacceptable in his eyes.
