Hi, I am just starting my journey to surgery. I am about to start the six months of weight management classes before I can be approved for surgery. My question is has anyone used MedCost insurance before? I was just wondering how quickly they approve surgery and/or if they have a high rate of denials. Thanks.

Hi Susan and welcome to the journey! It's quite a ride.

I have MedCost and they didn't give me a bit of trouble. My surgeon knew exactly what they required and made sure every i was dotted and t crossed before submitting for approval. If you want, take a look at my profile. I documented each appointment I had. There were some 'abnormal' delays in my process because (1) the person handling my paperwork went out for the same surgery and (2) I had to go through scheduling around a vacation for me, thenThanksgiving, Christmas, New Year. So I think what took 5 months really could have been done in 4.

My surgeon actually told me he never had any doubt about MedCost approving me but of course he couldn't tell me that upfront.

There's also a forum for insurance help on this site. If you want more info, just check it out.

Let me know if you have any other questions. I'll be glad to help, if I can.

Karen

I also had MedCost.  They approved me within a week once all the paper work was submitted.  I also had some hang-ups with the paperwork.  Someone at the doctor's office didn't send in my full exercise documentation, but other than that, it went fine.  Good luck with the process and let us know how it goes. Take care. Ellen

Thanks for the information. It feels like it will take forever, but as fast as time goes the six months of weight management program will fly by. I'll keep checking in from time to time.

Hey Susan!  I see that we share the same surgeon!!  Fuzz and his team are great!  I have Medcost insurance and his office submitted my stuff on a Thursday and I was approved by the following Tuesday so 4 business days is all it took -- it just seemed to take forever to get to the point of being ready to have everything submitted!!!  Actually the time went by pretty fast -- I attended the P.A.V.E. class in early December and was approved in late May.  So about 5 months give or take a week or so.  My Medcost plan didn't require me to have a 6 month supervised diet but I know that every plan is different.  Have you attended any of the support group meetings yet?  I get really pumped up about this surgery after attending those so if you haven't tried them, check them out!!   Very inspirational and informative.   Good luck to you! Donna
