I guess I am not crazy after all...(long)
A while back I posted here about wondering if I was normal with my food choices. I have eaten any bread, sugar, pasta, since before the surgery and I have been eating very high protein low carb. I also haven't eaten salad or any RAW veggies because my nut said that they were hard to digest until 9 months out and so I have avoided them. I see lots of people eating crackers, sandwhiches and even cookies but I haven't even attempted to try any of those things.
Well I went to the Surgeon for my 6 months check up (really 7 months but I am off schedule due to a few complications in the begining) and talked to him about my food choices. His exact response was "You are doing exactly what I want you to do." He said he expects me to High protein/low carb from now on. He stated to stay as far away from carbs as possible because the cause you to have cravings and really do you no good. I don't live in fear I just assume they will make me sick so I don't cross the line.
I mentioned that some have stated it is very important to have a well balanced diet and I shouldn't be so strict on myself. I told him I think of some foods, (Bread, pasta, sugar and flour of any kind) as alcohol as if I were an alcoholic. I can't have just one. If I do, I fall off the wagon and I don't ever want to cross that line. I am totally happy with my food choices and honestly don't miss those things at all. Dr. Lowe, said Shannon, you have choosen to change your life and be healthy and how you are eating now will keep you healthy for the rest of your life.
I felt so much better after talking to him because I have lost -122 lbs and am just about to cross over into onerland!!!
So my point is he was addement with me about the fact that I shouldn't try to compare what I am eating or doing to everyone here or my support group and continue on my course. He said being scared of eating certain things wasn't really a bad thing because it helps me stay on task. I guess I just wanted to post because I think I finally stopped wondering if I am normal compared to other WLS people.
Thanks for listening,
Shannon
Hi Shannon,
It's good that things are going well for you.
Your right about all the things you mentioned in your post about eating right, veggies, etc. I know most raw foods give me gas, like cucumbers, lettuce, etc.
Also, you cannot compare your sucess with someone else's. I have alot of belly fat but lost all the fat on the back side of my body. Our bodies also metabolize differently too. I plan on toning up this year. I have to heal from 2 surgerys with in 2 weeks for rny complications.
It's good to hear of your sucess and you deserve applauds.
if it is working for you then why change it?!
some folks only do shakes and protein supps and barely eat real food...if they want to do that then fine....but that isn't doable for most folks.
if you are happy with your current eating arrangements then great..if you get to your goal and feel you can splurge on a carb here and there without gaining a lot then even better!
I pretty much eat what I want just less---and that works for me. IF I notice I am adding pds instead of maintaining or losing then I cut back and do what works for me...which I do a lot of rice/beans, boca crumbles instead of ground beef, whole grains. I don't feel like I am denying myself anything so I don't really go overboard or crazy. I may not have completely changed my eating habits but I eat less calories overall and 90% of my beverages have 0 calories--which for me was a huge calorie buster. Those regular sodas packed on tons of needless weight!!!!!! I still portion out most of my foods 3+ yrs out.
My approach wouldn't work for a lot of WLS folks but it has worked for me and I am within 10 lbs of my goal after having a baby 8 months ago. I like to blame it on the extra stretched out skin!!! I did get to my goal and then got pregnant (18 months out).
congrats on your great weight loss!!!!!! don't second guess yourself---you know you best!
