Future lapbanders read this
Ok folks,
Went for my 2 week checkup today. First things first---down 19 lbs. Thank goodness for that(even though it was probably all water) Feeling good, and got the green light for a change off this liquid diet. Thank God.
Here is some news I found out today. My surgeon explained that it was not good enough JUST to lose weight. You have to lose the RIGHT KIND OF WEIGHT. He has a body composition monitor that tells how much of your body is fat %, how much is water, how much your BMI is, and about 15 other things I didnt know!!!
So, although he was glad to see the weight go, he stressed to get back busy in the gym, and pack on that protein.
Just a note for all you future lapbanders.

Hi Steve - I am waiting to have weightloss surgery, but am considering the Lapband method now, as opposed to RNY. How was your procedure and do you recommend it? Who was you doctor? I was also told I had to lose 30 lbs. before the doctor would do RNY. I wonder if you know of any BMI limitations on having Lapband. If I could lose weight myself, I wouldn't need this surgery, ya know? Grrrrrrr...
Thanks,
Mary Ann
Mary Ann,
Listen,, I will give you MY best advice. If you read my profile, you will see the 13 month struggle I had with all this. Ok?
Now, my procedure--once I got thru with all the insurance bull crap, the actual procedure was a breeze. I had no gas pains, no discomfort, and was walking 30 minutes after they woke me. The absolute worst thing about my surgery, were the LOUD ass nurses in and out of my room all nite.
BMI limitations on lap band-- its hard as heck to get approved for lapband. It DOES matter what your BMI was. My BMI was 50.1, and I went thru hell to get it approved.
Pre surgery weight loss-- trust me, you should do everything in your power to lose weight before your surgery. All the cliches you hear are true,, its good to have some good habits established to make the lifestyle change easier.
My doctor was C. Kenneth Mitchell of Pinehurst NC. Good surgeon, good PA, and comprehensive program. But you do have a lot of uninformed nurses and staff working for him.
