RNY Revision APPROVAL!
Well, I have finally been approved to have a revision of my RNY which was originally done in 1997. I went from approx 400 lbs down to 245 lbs but then started gaining weight and am currently at 333 lbs. My stomach has stretched some but mostly it is the opening that has stretched, allowing food to pass right through and not linger to satisfy my hunger, therefore I gained quite a bit of weight back.
The surgeon performing the revision did not do the original surgery so the only thing he has to go on are the op notes and the upper GI. He will try to do it lap but depending on adhesions, etc will determine whether it ends up open (which doesn't bother me since the 1st one was open). He said that he really doesn't know what he will do during the revision because of the unknown aspects of my previous surgery. He may be able to revise it to their current way of doing the RNY, he may just be able to do more of the bypass part, or he suggested maybe doing a BPD.
This is where my question comes in. Has anyone had their RNY revised and if so to what procedure? I just found out last week that I was approved because I was denied the first try. The surgeon did the appeal and I put it out of my mind. I got a phone call last week that I was approved and would be having surgery Dec 13! It took about 1 month for the appeal process to work. Since things have moved so fast I haven't had a chance to research the BPD because I'm trying to get things tied up at work so I can be out for a couple of weeks with the surgery so any info any of you guys could give me would be wonderful!
Thanks and say a prayer on Dec 13 at 1:00pm! Kathy
Kathy,
I had a revision 2 years ago. My original RNY basically came undone, so my surgeon ended up restapling the pouch and then disecting the stomach. Weightloss has been slow, but I have lost 100 lbs. since the revision. I am not familiar with BPD, so I can't help you there. My surgeon did not recommend doing lap, so it was an open RNY, which was okay because I knew what to expect.
I hope all goes well for you.
