I am just in the beginning process of having r-n-y surgery. One minute I am so excited and the next minute I am even more anxious. Any suggestions or encouraging words of advice? I went to my initial consultation this past Monday and have a 6 month waiting period. I know the 6 month period is a good thing but also I have my mind made up but I still have to go through the insurance approval process and that wait makes me so anxious.

hello sonia- it's a serious journey you've started but one most people will tell you is DEFINITELY worth every step. my surgery is now 2 years ago and i feel healthier and happier than i have in the past 20 years. my (unsolicited, i know!) advise is to stay focused on your health rather than superficial appearances and this will give you the staying power to complete all the pre-requisites asked of you. try to not be discouraged when you are asked to do a pre-surgery diet to demonstrate your determination and ability to make the changes surgery demands; i cried all the way home from my nutritionist appointment with the south beach diet in hand.... but found myself 55 pounds lighter when having my operation five months later. the pre surgery diet was my big emotional hurdle-- and we all have different hurdles to face-- but all will be good in the end if you can focus on where you want to be in your new life! take good care and know anxiety is normal. alex

Hi Sonia, Take the 6 months as an oppotunity to write down thoughts you have, questions for your doc and stock up on SF popsicles, jello, broths, and the things you will need after surgery. Write down where you want to be a year AFTER surgery. What is the biggest thing you hope to accomplish? Things like that. Good luck and know that we are always here when you need us!!! Pegi 283/135

Sonia, THese next six months will be filled with emotions. I debated the pro's and cons of surgery up until I was on the gurney at North East Medical getting prepped. Once I was asleep, it was out of my hands. Ofcourse, I had a wonderful exprience. I had no pain, was able to get up afterwards to start walking and use the rest room. I was worried about throwing up because having anesthisa does that to me. Zippo, no problems. I'm 9 months post op have had no problems, nothing. I have chronic back pain and the wieght loss did not help this, however, I have to learn to deal with this and I have physican's working on this for me. I've had the chronic back pain for 3 years now. IF you have any questions let me know. Ofcourse, these months will fly by, just make sure you follow everything to a T and listen to all the rules.
