Centers of Excellence
Hi Kristen. They are in the process of applying to be a center of excellence. If I understand correctly, that is a government designation that will allow them to accept Medicaid for WLS. Aside from that, I'm not sure what meaning that has.
Pitt County Memorial Hospital and the Brody School of Medicine get very very good reviews from those that have had their surgery there on this website. They have almost all private rooms, and are apparently well equipped for baritric surgery. As with most anything else of great importance, just make sure you do your research. Ultimately, you'll probably know what the best fit is when you meet them. It doesn't hurt to go to several different doctors and get a feeling for what they're about. There is a second practice that does WLS at Pitt, that would be Dr. Naziri and crew. They would be an option as well.
My doctor, for my upcoming surgery, is Dr. Chapman. I am comfortable with that decision, as I feel like he's the best fit for me. I am confident in his skill and history. Remember in all this, you have a choice, you don't have to go to a certain doctor just because someone tells you to. I'm sure you'll make the best decision for you.
Take care and keep us posted.

Centers of Excellence is just a designation that a hospital recieves for jumping thru certain hoops and doing certain things. You need to find a surgeon and office support that works for you.
Some insurance companies will only pay for Centers of Excellence so you may need to start there. I had my RNY over 18 months ago at Wesley Long in Greensboro with no complications whatsoever and a friend at works daughter almost died and spent 1 week on a vent and 6 weeks on TPN (IV nutrition) and she went thru Dukes program.
Just make sure you do your research and do what feels right to you!
Hi Kristen,
I had my surgery at ECU on Aug. 9, and I highly recommend the facility. My surgeon is great. The care at the hospital was excellent. And when I brought a minor concern to my surgeon's attention at my 3-mo. checkup, he was all over it in a flash. From what I'm reading from other posts, it doesn't sound like "Center of Excellence" is something you are awarded so much as something you receive through documentation. If ECU's application is in the mail, there's no doubt in my mind that it'll be on that list shortly. Of course, as everyone else has advised, you have to find the facility that works for you, but if quality of care is your primary concern, you have no worries with ECU.
Take care!
