Recovery Time?
I had RNY on July 14, 2005. It was open so I have a long scar. It took me about 10 days before I could sleep in my own bed. I slept in a lazy boy. At about 2 weeks out I was up and getting around although it was still a bit painful. At 4 weeks out I was taking walks and I had no discomfort. I did feel weak and tired in the beginning. So please take all your vitamins; they do help with that. Today I feel great . I wish you luck with your surgery.
Good luck on your upcoming surgery!! I had surgery at the end of April in 2005. The pain of the surgery and incisions didn't last too long for me, about 2 weeks of real discomfort. In fact, I went on vacation just a week and a half after my surgery. My problems was getting back to normal as far as my energy level and basically just feeling well. It was almost like I had the flu for over a month. But, I do know so many people that were back to normal lives and feeling great just two weeks after surgery. It's so different for everyone. Just make sure you take in everything you are told to, water, vitamins, PROTIEN, etc. It makes the biggest difference in how you feel. And before you know it you'll sit back in amazment that so much time has passed, so much weight has fallen off your body and you've transformed into a completely new human, and it will feel like overnight.
Hey Amy,
My surgery was August 21, 2006. I was in the hospital 2 days came home Wednesday took pain pill until Saturday evening. Went on walks starting the next Wednesday. I had little pain. I stayed home for 6 weeks went back to work Oct 2. and have been back at work for a month now without any problems. I felt like myself @ 2 weeks out. I take all my vitamins daily!
Hope this helps, everyone is different.
HEY AMY,
FIRST, CONGRATULATIONS ON YOUR UP COMMING SURGERY. I KNOW YOU'LL DO GREAT. I HAD MY SURGERY ON FRIDAY THE 13th AND WAS HOME ON THE 15th OF OCTOBER, I HAD LAP RNY. SLEPT IN MY OWN BED ON MY FIRST NIGHT HOME. IT WAS SLIGHTLY UNCOMFORTABLE THE FIRST NIGHT TILL I FOUND THE BEST POSITION TO LAY IN THE BED.
MY BEST ADVISE I CAN GIVE YOU FOR YOUR HOSPITAL STAY IS THIS: WHEN YOU GET BACK TO YOUR ROOM REST FOR AS LONG AS POSSIBLE, THEN GET UP AND SIT IN A CHAIR. IF YOU'RE UP TO IT TAKE A WALK IN THE HALL.
IF THE NURSES ARE RELUCTANT, INSIST. THIS WILL HELP MOVE THE GAS OUT OF YOUR SYSTEM FASTER. WALKING IS THE BEST THING YOU CAN DO FOR YOURSELF IN AND OUT OF THE HOSP.
DON'T BE AFRAID TO ASK FOR HELP OR FOR PAIN MEDICINE, THE WORST THING YOU CAN DO IS LAY IN BED IN PAIN, IF YOU HAVE PAIN. I ONLY HAD SLIGHT PAIN ON THE FIRST DAY, ONLY USED MY PCA (pain med) 4 TIMES, SO THEY TOOK IT AWAY.
IF THEY GIVE YOU AN INSENTIVE SPIROMETER, AND THEY SHOULD, USE IT. THIS HELPS OPEN YOU AIRWAYS AND HELPS GET THE ANESTHESIA OUT OF YOUR LUNGS.
MOST OF ALL FOLLOW YOUR DOCTORS ORDERS. HE KNOWS WHAT'S BEST. IF YOU'RE HAVING PROBLEMS DON'T BE AFFRAID TO CALL THE DR. HE'S THE EXPERT AND KNOWS WHAT TO EXPECT.
BEST OF LUCK, I KNOW YOU'LL DO GREAT
I'LL BE PRAYING FOR OUR LORD IN HEAVEN TO GUIDE YOUR SURGEONS HANDS AND PLACE HIS HEALING HANDS ON YOU.
SEE YOU ON THE LOSING SIDE, DONNA, SFY (southern fried yankee)
Hello All,,, I had my lap, RNY on Tuesday March 14th 2006--- went back to work ( desk job, no lifting ) the next Monday , so 6 days after surgery. I spent two days in the hospital came home,,, slept just fine in my own bed first night. There were 4 little incisions NO stiches,,, just sticky tape stuff, that itched . Otherwise , maybe moving around slow but really for me I had no problems, THANK THE LORD.
I was so scared at the point of a week before surgery , I worried I would back out or freak out at the hospital the day of surgery,,,, but I was so calm and so ready to change my life, I never shed a tear, I was not worried at all,,, Dr Melkonian came in to see me as I was getting ready for the table,,, he said, " see you soon, you will be fine Allison " .... my last memory before getting knocked out... SMILING .
It is such a exciting time for you pre opers, I know how you feel, may I suggest ,,,take lots of pictrures now ( yes fat ones ) ... start a journal , do a scrapbook,,, keep everything , I really enjoying looking over my scrapbook at my weight loss, and the doctor will love a page all about him
Anyways, let me know if you have any questions I may could answer . Having gastric by pass has saved my life, and I am so grateful for being able to have it .
take care
