I got my first appointment
hello, my name is Sheli and I am new to the board. I just got my first appointment on November 1st, to visit the dr. What should I expect? I am so nervous, I never have talked about my weight to anyone before. I guess i can say I have made my first step to take care of the problem I have with my weight.
thanks for listening

Sheli,
I can't tell you how Dr. Davidson will be, but I can tell you that my surgeon went over the surgery and exactly what would take place. He talked with me to see if he felt I was ready to handle it and capable of following the rules. It was difficult to listen to (I shuddered every time I heard the words: super morbidly obese). But, he was compassionate, understanding and NOT belittling. Most of these surgeons have dealt with overweight people and understand our feelings and insecurities. Hopefully someone can tell you directly about the surgeon you have chosen, but trust me, the first visit is exciting.

Sheli, I remember my 1st visit. I had gone to see another surgeon 3 years ago. He was nice but seemed to feel that my bmi was more of a concearn than I had read about. So when I went to dr lowe's office I was a bit fearful that now that I was even heavier than 3 years prior that they would tell me that I May have to have 2 procedures as the 1st surgeon. But none of that was mentioned. My bmi was 53 and that fell well within the criteria to have the RNY. What a relief. They do give you alot of info but it is all things that you will need for your adventure. Be very open and honest. They want to know what you are thinking. Your hopes, fears and what you hope to gain.I am assuming that you will have to see a nutritionist, and have a psych. Eval before your surgery. I thought that these were both wastes of time. But you learn alot about what your body can tolerate after the surgery from the nut. The psych. Eval tells you alot about why you eat. I had no underlying abuse or lack of love as so many people find is the reason they turned to food. I found that I saw food as comfort and love. All the women in my family (grandmother, great aunt, mother, sisters and even self) are great cooks. So what a better way to show the love. Anyway all the steps that you will go through is one step to the losing side. Good luck on your journey. Don't be shy talking to any professional about your weight. If you had cancer would you be shy talking to a Dr. About that? Obesity is a disease that you need to recover from. The help is out there. Take it and use it to so that you can live the life that you were put here to live. tammy
