Hi- I am new and really concerned my insurance (Cigna PPO) won't cover a lap band or RNY because I don't have significant co-morbidities. (This is my opinion from research). My Primary Doc is all for me having either surgery and feels it would be the best having known me for 10 years. I am 5'5" and I currently weigh 235. My weight has fluctuated between 180-210 for at least 9 years. I had a hysterectomy last year and cannot stop gaining. My BMI is about 39 now. I have stress incontinence (even though I had surgery to tighten bladder neck), back/neck pain and a history of severe depression for the past 20 years. In your experience, have insurance companies who deem this a medical necessity been tough if you don't have apnea or severe hypertension. If I really took a good look at myself I am sure I could add more complaints (out of breath easily, no energy et****asional higher BP). I had a severe depression that hospitalized me in March and am running out of hope. I feel much better but I really hate myself for the way I look and am so scared I won't be approved. Thank you for your help!!

Hey Kitty....I was about your size when I got approved and had my surgery in Feb 06. I did have some co-morbidities too, but make sure that your Surgen lists that you have hight BP, list all the joint pain, acid reflux(gurd) anything that you think is important. Just remember that some insurances require a psy. visit too...the depression will concern them maybe....Good luck and I hope you get your surgery soon... Sandi

Hi Sandi- I have an appt with Dr Lowe on Sept 12. The woman who called to set it up with me said I would need a Psychiatrist's approval. No problem. The depression is actually under control now, it is the frustration of not being able to loose any weight that is keeping me challenged mentally most days. Unfortunately, I know we all know how that feels all too well. Thank you for your help. I just haven't had any diagnoses of CHRONIC BP, apnea etc. didn't know if it had to be a chronic problem that had been officially diagnosed.

HI I finally had surgery (Lap RNY) after being denied 3 times. I am a lightweight and my BMI was between 38-41 at any given time. I had mild sleep apnea with no other co morbidities but my surgeon was persistent and in the end called my insurance company to talk to the medical director. I guess all I can say is be persistent. I think finally the insurance co gets tired of hearing frm yo and says yes! Check out my profile if you want! Jen 5'4" 243/154/143

I didnt meet BCBS criteria for WLS but was approved after going thru their appeals process (had to appeal 3 times). I did not have sleep apnea or hypertension... everybodies experience is different so all you can do is try!
