Does anyone on this forum buy their own health insurance out of pocket and what companies or policies pay for WLS. I am looking to buy my own health insurance...The company I work for does not offer Health insurance. If anyone could please help answer this question I would appreciate it. Thanks? Have a great 4 everyone!

I was going to buy my own insurance as well, due to my current insuance having a written exclusion for anything related to weight loss, Blue Cross Blue Shield of NC, does cover the surgery if medically necessary you may wanna check their website out. Good Luck to you

I looked into an individual policy thru BCBS of NC - if you have had *any* medical issues in the past 5 years they seriously jack up the rate. I had broken my ankle about a year earlier - I got a quote (dont believe the one online its not even close! they quoted me less than $200) and they wanted......... caaaa-ching $900 a month. My friend had WLS and got a quote 2 1/2 years after from BCBS as well and they wanted $1200 a month for her. Not sure if they cover WLS these days - my guess would be no. sorry I couldnt be of more help!!! Not sure what other companies offer in NC - I know Cigna does not... I think UHC may but they definately dont cover WLS. If there are enough people at your company you may want to see if they would get together for a small business plan - the company wouldnt have to pay anything if they didnt want and you could get a better rate as a group. I know Cigna and BCBS do small business - not sure of the requirement... when I worked at Cigna I think it was 100 people or more.

I can only answer question about insurance in general...not individual policies. I do our filing for our office and I know BCBS, UHC, Cigna, Aetna all cover WLS. It will depend on the policy you choice as to wether it's a covered benefit or not. Those are the big players and the company as a whole will cover it's just again depends on if you ask for it to be included in your policy and again not sure on the pre-existing or how that work for indiviual policy. Good Luck
