Anybody out there have any preop liquid diet suggestions?

Hi everyone, I have a date for my surgery for July 6 and I am having trouble with the liquid diet thing. I just realized when I started this diet that I was addicted to food. What a reality check!! Any suggestions please post. Thanks, Takisha 425/396/?

Hi Takisha, I know that it is hard but it will make it so much easier during your surgery and post op. Just keep pushing the liquids and take it a day at a time. I know you can do it. This will be the greatest journey of your life and the pre-op liquids (I think) help prepare you for the post op period when you can't eat yet. HANG IN THERE!!!!!!! I know you can do it!! Keep your eye on the prize to come. Pat

I found chewing gum helped me out - it gave me something I could actucally chew as well as seemed to curb some cravings for "real food". Other than that just take one day at a time - the first 4 days were the hardest for me and then after that it was easier. I found that after those first few days you no longer have stomach hunger (now head hunger is a different story) so at least my body wasnt in protest over the liquid diet. I was allowed blenderized soups on my 2 week pre-op so to feel "normal" Id go out with the girls at work for lunch to places I knew had soups I could have! I found some new SF ice pops - diet AW root beer, diet Slice and diet DrPepper... somebody here had mentioned them and finally saw them at walmart today - am excited about something "different".

that is a very good question. where are you going to have yours done. i am planning to have mine done in pinehurst. i am going to have to do that same thing. so i would love to have the answers myself. let me hear from you and others. angela d

Takisha, Today is my 1 month post op so I hasn't been to long since I had to drink the shakes. It is very hard, but you know what, it is all worth it in the long run. Each time you have to drink your shake just think about the weight coming off. My surgery was May 25 and I have lost a total of 55 lbs. I really should be drinking the shakes now to help me get in my protein but I just couldn't bring myself to drink it anymore after living off of them for the first 2 weeks after surgery. I have got some recipes at home that I will send you of things you can add to your shakes to help them go down just a little better. I know you can add peanut butter (the low fat kind) blend and pop in the freezor for a little bit to make it a little slushy... then eat it with a spoon... that way your "eating" something but its still your shake. I will try to get those recipes and send them to you. I really hope everything goes good! Hang in there, Your going to do GREAT!

Congrats on your new journey. I think most of us realized we were addicted to food at some point in the journey. I am 4 months post op and sometimes food is still a struggle. I did not have to do a preop liquid diet, but i feel if I did, I might have not went through with the surgery. So, I did my liquid diet post op and it was ok, but I realized how much I missed food. We are all in same boat. I even dreamt of food after surgery, just knowing you cannot have something makes you miss it more. Atleast for me. You will do awsome. Just remember how great the rewards will be. Jennifer

Hello , I am 6 weeks post op so it was not long ago that I suffered through the 2 week liquid fast. My suggestions are S/F popcycles , S/F fudgecycles are the best!!!!! I was allowed tomatoe soup , S/F fat free jello , and puddings, crystal light , all diet soda's ( although I did not use these becasue I was getting used to the "no soda thing" ) , boulion , yogurt . Wal*mart has a great low carb liquid yogurt made by blue bunny called carb control. They are wonderful for pre and post op needs. And of course you know the old favorite protein drinks. you can make these blended with banana's , peanut butter, fruit etc...... so they are a little thicker to sustain you longer. I called my nutritionalist and she gave me lots of suggestions. the real purpose of the liquid diet is to shrink your liver, pancreas and intestines and to give you a jump start on weight loss so it is very important that you don't cheat. the first few days really sucked but as will all "diets" the first days are always the tuffest and I am here to say it does get better. And more importantly SO worth every moment of my pre op suffering (LOL) . I wish you the best of luck, you can do it.
