Help plz!!!

i called dr fernandez and spoke with susan there..she explained yes he takes medicaid so that was good news also she said he has done bypass on 1 person over 440lbs..but here's where things dont look so good..i can only take few steps..i have to use wheelchair if i go out...i dont go out unless is extreme emergency..so now i have to find surgeon who's willing to take medicaid and someone over440lbs and that has to use wheelchair..i can take few seps but have to use walker as a aid....can anyone out there help me? or am i doomed to die here in my bed? i been tryig over 6 years for the bypass seems i get no where..when i get alittle hope seems i always get knocked back 10 steps..i need help and no one will help me..what do i do now?

I don't know your situation or your over all health status, but from experience I do know that getting to the point of actually being able to have the surgery will not happen over night. Eventually if you are able to get in with a doctor that will do the surgery you will be required to go on a liquid diet for 2 maybe even 3 weeks before the surgery. Is there anyway you can try to do this now to help you lose some weight? Even if you lose some weight now, thats not going to knock down your chances of having the surgery. You sound really depressed and all of us have been there and you can't let your wt issues get you down. You are not doomed to die in your bed unless you give up and as long as you fight you have a chance. Don't think that surgery is a cure all. You will still have the same urges to eat the same things, you just can't eat as much and you will have to always be mindful of what you are eating. If you are dead set on having the surgery and getting a new lease on life, then do what you have to do to get there, but in the mean time try to make a conscious effort to change your eating habits/lifestyle now, because you will have to when you have the surgery. I hope this has helped a little. I KNOW its a lot easier said than done, but you can do it. Also, I would like to say, put your faith in God. He will help you with this battle. He will also give you peace about the decisions you will be faced with if you decide to go ahead with the surgery. God Bless and good luck. Angie

Kimber, I am a little confused. Is Fuzz (or Susan, rather) saying he cant help you because you are in a wheelchair? Or are you worried about getting to his office and other required appointments because of the wheelchair? Lisa L.

Kimber, I am six days out from surgery and it was a long slow approval process for me. There was so much pre-op work to be done whi*****luded tons of paperwork, complete physical including labs, x-rays, a liver scan, a thallium dye stress test, a gynocological exam, mammogram , psychiatric evaluation including a 600 question questionnaire, a five year history of my health and diet history and released secured for all my records to go to my surgeon. All that was done before I met with my surgeon. Then it was at least a month after meeting with him before I got approved by my insurance carrier. I came to believe that part of the time it took to get to that point was to see if I would hold on to my decision and that I was committed to having this surgery done. Then after I was approved I had to go on a 3 week fast. The main reason the doctor said for doing this was to shrink and soften up the liver for surgery. Since the stomach is situated behind the liver they have to be able to move it around and a hard and stiff liver can cause many more problems than a soft one. But again, I believed this fast was to see what I was made of -- kind of a testing of my mettle. For one week I at low carb SlimFast for two meals and the third was protein (shrimp, chicken, steak, beef etc.) and a big green salad or cooked low carb vegetable (No pototatoes, corn or starchy veg). The second and third weeks were 4 or 5 SlimFast a day. It was hardly delicious (actually I did a lot of gagging" but I lost 30 pounds during that time and proved to myself that I could be true to this program.) I experimented with different hi protein low carb beverages (GNC is great!) I know this is rather long-winded but perhaps there is something that you can find in the words that may help inspire you to hang on tightly and never give up. if this is meant to be it will happen but you will have to work very hard to get it!!!! start walking a little more everyday. so what if you walk with a walker or cane....take 4 more steps everyday. eventually you will find yourself with a little more endurance. make an appointment with fuzz and have a goal to walk more and more everyday. you have to be able to walk to exercise and endurance doesn't come without work. when sitting pick up some soup cans and move your arms around...if you can't pick up the soup cans just move your arms...just move move move!!!!!! you will feel better and it will better qualify you!!!! keep a diary so that you really notice the improvement!! that way you won't feel frustrated..you'll see how far you have come. goodluck!! susan
