Hi and congratulations on your weight loss, what a great outcome.

I'm curious about the length of your bypass, I had 3 feet bypassed and lost 50 lbs, 2 1/2 years ago.

Be well!!

Topic: RE: Gastic Bypass vs. Extreme Dieting??
Hi, this is something that researchers are FINALLY figuring out.  Dieting just doesn't work.  Obesity is not just eating too much.  There are may factors that play into it such as changes in metabolism, and of course the mind.  Weight loss surgery is a tool that is used to cut down food intake and calorie absorption.  It doesn't stop there.  Still the patient has to come to terms with all the issues that surround the excessive eating whether it is a trauma, crises, boredom, eating disorder, a loss, a hurt, stress or whatever the triggers are.  Most folks don't decide that one day they will get fat.  There are always issues surrounding the triggers to eat.  They may be hidden very deep and sometimes the patient isn't aware that they are there. That is why good counceling sometimes helps to peel away the layers to find out what the reasons are.  Once researchers realize that obesity is a very complex disease, it will remain an apidemic in this country.

Clueless about weight loss and weight loss surgery of any kind.

Ok, this has confused me for some time now. Why is it when someone has weight loss surgery and they can only eat a few bites at a time they lose wt super mega fast, but if a person without surgery cuts calories that low, their body goes into "starvation mode" and they stop losing wt, or even gain some back, even though they're barely eating? Just doesn't make sense to me...Thanks!!

Have you looked into the Duodenal Switch?  You're halfway there already.

Topic: Mindfulness

I have found that being 'mindful' has proven to be a powerful tool too help me take care of myself. It requires me to be focused and present. It also helps me be aware and accountable. I am not always as 'mindful' as I'd like to be, but more so now than I was before I had my WLS.

To me, being 'mindful' means that I am aware of what I'm doing and accountable to myself for my actions. Everyone needs to find their own ways of doing this, but I think that we all need to do this in order to be successful in the long term.

*  Being mindful mean I get on the scale daily so that I am aware of my weight and am able to make corrections when they are still minor.
*  Being mindful means logging my intake and activity if I notice that my scales are 'swinging' more than the 7 lb range that seems normal for my body -- basically, up or down 3 lbs from my 'sweet spot'.
*  Being mindful means thinking about what I'm eating and if it is something that 'fuels' my body.
*  Being mindful means leveraging my tool and 'taking care of business first', so that I start my meal with protein, move on to colorful carbs and then indulge in whatever else I want with whatever room I have left over.
*  Being mindful means being aware of how I'm 'feeling' when I'm eating

What does being mindful mean to you?

I know of some folks who went to Mexico and had great success.  Make sure you have a knowledgeable doctor locally to support your after care.
