Topic: Kids Will Be Kids

“Kids will be kids. Here's how to act like one.”

Have you ever said "I'm too old for that?" If you are past the age of nine or so, you probably don't skip anymore. In addition, you probably haven't tried doing a cartwheel, standing on your head, or walking like a crab in quite some time. Swinging by your knees from the monkey bars would probably result in a trip to the E.R. That said, having a mindset of what "young people" do and what "mature" people do can set the stage for inactivity. Instead of thinking you can't, why not try? You may still be able to jump on that pogo stick, ride a bike, and play hopscotch. If you don't want to do those things for fear of looking childish, then act like a child in another way: try something new. Find some new activity to test drive: yoga, dancing, or taekwondo. Stay young at heart, young in mind, and your body will likely follow.

Topic: Help me understand-My husband is having gastric by-pass surgery

My husband has decided to have Gastric By-Pass Surgery.  He had the Lap Band Surgery about 2 yrs ago,  He lost more weight pre surgery than he did post surgery.  He probably gained 10 out of 20 lbs back that he lost pre surgery, and hasn't lost any weight since the lap band surgery.  He claims the Lap Band didn't work for him,but he also didn't follow the guidelines suggested.  If he doesn't do what he is supposed to do (like cut his food small or chew good) he throws up (and it hurts me to here this).  I was not thrilled about the lap-band surgery, but as a wife that loves her husband, I would do anything to help him, but I can't change him!!  I  need to reach out to wives whose husband's have had this life changing surgery, especially ones who have been with their husband's at least one year post surgery.  I want to support my husband and even conform to eating what he has to eat.  We've been married over 30 yrs and I know his habits.  Please help me to understand as a spouse, what to expect.  I am a very supportive wife, but he has a mind of his  own.  PLEASE HELP ME UNDERSTAND!!

Topic: Cook with some wow

“You want to eat better, but healthy meals are just blah. Here's how to cook up some wow.”

If you think healthy recipes are something your husband will never brag about, you haven't tried the right ones yet. If you are just beginning to eat healthily, it may take you some time to re-educate your palette. Believe it or not, even though you may now think foods with lots of sauces, condiments, gravies, and breading is the best, once you begin eating better, you'll find new ways of enjoying food. Foods that are seasoned with spices, heart healthy fats, and fruit juices to name a few. Make a goal to try at least one new healthy recipe a week. If you don't like it, don't make it again. There are definitely some you won't like, but many more you'll find are really, really fabulous. Yes, even ones your husband and kids will devour

Topic: RE: Mini Gastric bypass or sleeve surgery? which is better

Hi there,

Putting it simply, I chose the MGB because it is revisable and reversible.  Read more about it at http://clos.net.  Contact any of the staff and they can give you more information.  Dr. Rutledge goes into great detail about the differences between the MGB and RNY.  He can explain it a whole lot better than I can.

However, the more you know, the better decisions you will make for yourself.  I can't tell you what is best for you.  Also, any procedure you pick is just a tool.  In order to keep the weight off is to make some behavior changes.  It would be great if altering the gut also alters the mind, but it doesn't.  It's always a good idea to get all your support systems in place BEFORE you have surgery.  That means a support group, nutritionist, exercise choices, and a therapist or Life Coach that has knowledge in the food addiction and disorder areas.

So, knowledge is power and that is what you need to make the right choice for you.  If after reading the website you have more questions, let me know, ok?

Topic: You...happier

“You - only happier.”

A recent study found that most people want the same thing: happiness. How do we get happy in our lives? Do we wait for the happiness fairy to sprinkle us with happy dust or plan for the day the happiness stork delivers a bundle filled with smiles on our door step? Sorry, no. We must figure out what will make us happy and then go out and get it. We've figured out that being healthier will make us happier, so we workout and we eat better. Not so miraculously, we feel better about ourselves...and happier. Now just expand on that. Look at your happiness factor in your relationships, religion, job, being creative, etc. Focus on one and a time and see what you can do to improve your happiness quotient.

Topic: Mini Gastric bypass or sleeve surgery? which is better

Hi all,

I am not familiar with the mini gastric bypass and none of the doctors here even mentioned it. They have mentioned RNY, sleeve and duodenal switch. Can you tell me a little about the mini gastric bypass and why you chose it over other surgeries and how you have been doing with it so far. Also, do you know a surgeon in NC that performs it?  Do you have to follow the same nutritional supplements as the RNY?  What makes it different?  Any input you can provide would be wonderful as I'm trying to figure out which surgery is best for me. I need to lose around 150.lbs and have heard sleeve might not help me lose that much.

Thanks!

Topic: RE: Back from Tijuana!

I love French Polynesia - my favorite place ever!  I'm excited to hear about your surgery in Tijuana. I used to live in San Diego (now Austin) and used to fly out of TJX a lot to save money.  I considered doing my surgery in Mexico since I'm mostly self-pay but worried about crime.   Did you have any issues?  I know I'll probably need some type of skin reduction surgery since I plan to loose 100 lbs or so and hope to do it in Mexico so all advise is appreciated!

My favorite island is all of them but I really liked Raitea and Rangioria.

Topic: RE: what should I do please help

I had the lap band before my bypass. It was very time consuming, Many appointments back and forth to the doctor's office to have the band tightened and then loosened etc. If it's too tight you will choke in your sleep from the saliva as it will not go down past the band into your stomach. if the band is too tight you could have a lot of thick mucas like stuff build up and will have to spit out. If your band is too loose you will feel hungry and the ability to eat anything will happen. To get the right amount of "Fill" in your band is the trick to be smooth sailing for success.  I also did not like the port that sewn into my side - it was bothersome, and it hurt at times.... To this day, the spot where the port was still hurts from time to time due to scar tissue. I'm just glad to have had the band removed-  I would get a revision and have the stomach made smaller.

Topic: Temptations

“You have an event to attend where temptations will be in view. Here's how to see past them.”

You can already see the beautiful buffet spread lined with everything you'd love to indulge in. Trays of food will float past with tempting smells. Drinks will flow. How on earth will you get through it without completely ruining your healthy plans? Use your imagination. As you imagine all of the food on the buffet table, see yourself walking past it. See the trays of food going by and watch yourself appreciating their interesting shapes and smells but not taking one. See the drinks and imagine the one that you'll choose (that is lower in calories) and how you'll walk around with your drink while you smile, talk, and have fun. By playing it out before hand, you'll be able to create a future you'll be proud of.
