Topic: Have the $$ to pay for surgery now...Need help finding mini gastric bypass surgeon
I shared my story on my personal experience with insurance companies.   I am one of those people who absolutely positively needed to have my insurance pay for wt loss as I was told by two orthopedic surgeons that if I did not lose 100 pounds in less than six months so they could operate on my knees and my left ankle that I would not be walking in a year.     See my post about additional information. I decided to take out a home equity loan since my home is paid for, which is truly sad.    I have to now pay for this surgery so that my insurance company will cover the knees and ankle surgery.     I am going to my local news station to have this advertised and offer to allow them to follow my case.  I feel that my situation might be unique in that I was prepped for surgery at a local hospital in Tennessee so that I could have the very much needed surgery on my knees and ankle but the anesthesiologist cancelled the surgery due to my risk.   Remember, even after this, the insurance company said my obesity surgery would be to cure my obesity, never mind the fact that it is required I lose 100+ pounds in six months or as soon as possible.   A letter from my internist, a letter from my first ortho surgeon and then another from a 2nd opinion ortho surgeon was to no avail. I believe insurance companies such look at each case individually and assess whether or not it is medically necessary and pay if it is.     NOW THE GOOD NEWS! ..... I am going to bite the financial bullet and do it myself.   So.....wish me luck everybody.  I am looking for the right facility and right physician.    I am looking to have it done under $15,000.00.    I want the mini gastric bypass.      Any ideas out there?  I want to have surgery in April.   I have no issues going outside the US. THANKS!

Topic: Barbara's Introduction
Hi There fellow MGBers, I had my MGB November 22, 2005--Just over 16 months ago with Dr. Rutledge in Vegas. My starting weight was 292 lbs. I currently weigh 161. (131 pounds lost) I had a rough start as you can hear about on Dr. R's video of me and my husband (see below). But even with the rough start I would do it all over again. The changes in my life have been extraordinary. I wanted to pop in here and browse around. I will post a bit more later. Topic: RE: Whats the difference?

Hi again!  No, I did not get insurance coverage for the MGB.  My insurance does not provide any out-of-network coverage and only covered WLS 50% last year and does not cover it all this year.  So I decided to pay out of pocket, because the copay for the surgery here would have costs over the $17,000 that I paid for the all-inclusive MGB.  That fee covers all the treatment while in the area of your surgery.  I had to stay in the hospital an extra day because my blood pressure was a little high, and that was covered in the $17,000. If you read the RNY boards, you can see all the complications these people have.  I know people who have gotten incisional hernias, ulcers, and obstructions.  MGB patients do get these problems, too, but I do not hear of them as frequently as I hear about the RNY patients.  Think about it:  There's one connection with the MGB and two connections with the RNY.  Obviously, that opens the patient up for more problems. As far as weight regain, I personally know four people that have gained back about 50% of what they lost.  I don't want to go through this whole ordeal and gain my weight back and still be vitamin deficient.  How awful would that be?  The people I'm talking about were about 2 years out when they started gaining.  They must have stretched their pouch out or something.

I live in Indiana and had my surgery done in Michigan, about 5 hours away.  It didn't really concern me, because I have a lot of faith in my family doctor and I knew she'd be able to handle whatever came up, which the only thing that happened was I got dehydrated due to my own stupidity!  She just orders my blood work and then calls Michigan if there's any questions.

If you have any more questions, please let me know!

Julie

Julie, I couldn't be more thrilled for you.  In fact, I am envious because I am still begging for medical records, going to doctors' appointments and trying to get my rec. letters ready for my ins. company.  I have heard nothing but good things from patients who have had MGB, and it all sounds great.  My comments above were not meant to malign any one surgery, I just wanted to convey my thought process in deciding on a surgery for me.

The statistics for MGB surgery aren't as complete because the CLOS group are the only people doing it.  So I am interested in hearing from people who have been through it.

As for the complications, there are thousands more people each year who have RNY so it would only make sense that we would run into more people with complications who have had RNY.  Still, I am no medical expert so I would like to hear more about your experience and the complications you talk about from the people who have had RNY. If you have a minute could you fill us in a little more? First, did you get insurance converage for the MGB?  Do you know of anyone who has yet?  Re:  the complications you spoke of from the people you know who had RNY, what were they?  The numbers for people *****gain weight after RNY are low.  What happened to those people (that person)?  How long did it take before they started regaining?  Did they regain it all back?

One of my concerns about MGB is that it is only performed in a limited number of areas which would require significant travel for me.  Do you live near one of their clinics or did you travel?  Did that concern you or did you have a doc back home that was familiar with what was going on in case there was a problem? Thanks again for sharing.  It is great to have this site where we can learn so much from each other.

Hi, Gail!  You've made a good choice looking into the MGB.  View my profile for more info.  Also, you can go to clos.net.  It's not the best site, but go ahead and look anyways.   As far as I know, the closest site to you would be Las Vegas. Best wishes, Julie

I did my research, too, and finally decided on the MGB 8 months ago.  I am down 98 pounds and loving life.  I can eat any food with no ill effects.  I can still eat meat, bread, pasta -- anything.  My surgery time was short, my recovery was quick, and I have not had ONE complication.   I've talk to soooo many people and know a few personally who had the MGB and all have had the same experience as me.   If I had to make the choice again, I would pick the MGB over and over again! As far as the website, I've relayed my opinions to CLOS, as have others, but Dr. R. likes his site and doesn't see anything wrong with it, LOL.  I would really like to see the site taken over by a "professional" so it would be easier to read for newbies.  After a while, you learn to navigate the site, but I can see where a lot of people would be turned off by it.  My mother looked at it once and never went back because she couldn't understand it. BTW, I know several people personally who have chosen the RNY and have had nothing but complications, can't eat normally, and also have gained back a lot of their lost weight.  I'm glad I didn't go that route. Regardless of which surgery you chose, I wish you the best! Julie :)

Topic: RE: Do any surgeons take insurance for MGB?

I don't think the insurance companies take it lightly, I think they clearly don't want to pay for it for fear of the millions of morbidly obese people that would make claims.  So they make it difficult (the number 1 most denied insurance claim in America!), they put up hurdles like diet history (and they often don't pay for the conventional program that many of them require before you can get precert for surgery).  They send out a lot of initial denials because many of us will go away.  Many of us are so beaten down, so depressed and feeling "unworthy" so we do in fact go away.  The key to it all is exactly what your ID says "Never give Up!"  The squeaky wheel does seem to get the oil.  I am working on squeaking my heart out right now and will not stop until I get what I need and I am entitled to ... healthcare coverage from my health insurance company!

As for the MGB go for it, but get prepared to make a case that the MGB isn't "experimental" surgery.  You may want to contact CLOS and tell them that you want to get approval for it and ask them to send you all the documentation and studies they can to support the fact that it is not "experimental."  that may be tough since they are the only ones doing the procedure, but you never know.

You go for it girl!

Keep us all posted.  I know there are many people who would like to have that procedure.

HI Jennifer Thank you for the information. I have been researching this for the last two years, but the MGB surgery was something new I saw. Unfortunately for me I'm still unable to find a surgeon that will take my insurance. My Doctor(PA) is currently helping me put a case together to appeal this. I hope it is approved. I don't understand really how this disease can be taken so lightly by so many. It's life threatening, you would think that that would be enough..... I wish you hte very best. Ingrid

Topic: RE: Do any surgeons take insurance for MGB?
After researching WLS for the past 4 years I finally have insurance that covers it and I am ready to go.  Right before I got my insurance I seriously researched and considered the MGB surgery after seeing that same special on the Discovery Channel.  My husband and I both cried when we watched it. We were also excited because the price was less than RNY (except that I live in St. Louis and I would have to travel to one of his locations) .  I wrote to Dr. Rutledge and really researched the surgery.  The only data on MGB surgery seems to be from CLOS (the doctors' group that until recently was all related to Rutledge).  That didn't sit well with me.  Then I got my insurance and found out that it wasn't covered.  I am a lawyer so I went to work to find out how to get the surgery covered.  In doing more research I decided against it.  The numbers just aren't in for my comfort level and other surgeons don't seem to be following suit.  WLS surgery is big business and if that surgery was the next big thing I would think other surgeons would be scrambling to start doing it.  Instead ... no one is following.   The surgeon I found near my home told me that there is some kind of loop that the MGB makes with your intestine and he didn't think that was a good idea.  I am not good at medical jargon (although I am getting better), after many more questions I do not feel comfortable with the MGB. Those are just my thoughts, but research any surgery thoroughly.  We are just plain folks on this site!
