I'm Kim, and we've spoken on here, Van.  I had my MGB with Dr. Rutledge in Nov. 2006.  He bypassed 6 feet, so he said, and I lost way too much getting down to 90 lbs.  I had to have a revision in Nov. 2007 to a gastric sleeve. When my new surgeon put my intestines back, he measured my bypass and it was "way more than 6 feet", and "the equivalent of a DS surgery."   Needless to say, I have endured hell this last year with all I went through. Fom being abandoned and not getting the info I needed from Dr. R, to nearly dying from malnutrition due to the malabsorption, at least I am alive and getting back to life again as I continue to gain weight to a healthy goal.  I'm 9 lbs. away from my goal weight now.  But I feel like I have lost close to a year of productive life due to this problem.   Still, I would do WLS again.  However, with what I know now, I doubt I would have chosen the MGB for myself.  I know it works for alot of people, but when you become one of the bad statistics, it skews your perspective on the surgery.  That happens with all type of surgery though.

Topic: RE: needing some clarification re MGB PLEASE READ , THANKS :)
A gastric sleeve is where they make your stomach into a vertical sleeve. There is no bypass of intestines.  The pyloric valve is kept to regulate food flow to the intestines.   I am one of the people who had a revision from an MGB to a gastric sleeve.  Dr. Rutledge bypassed way too much intestine for my needed weight loss. I had my MGB in Nov. of 2006, and  my revision in Nov. of 2007.  I lost way too much weight with it and ended up down to 90 lbs.  When my new surgeon did my revision, he told me that MORE than 6 feet had been bypassed, and what I had was the equivalent of a DS!  I never considered the DS because it was too drastic for me and the amount of weight I wanted to lose (80-85 lbs.). My new surgeon re-hooked up all my intestines and moved my pyloric valve with it, to the base of my stomach sleeve.  The sleeve portion I had with the MGB was larger than a standard gastric sleeve, so he made my sleeve smaller, in an effort to help me not to regain too much.   So far, I am having success.  I've gained 21 lbs. since my revision to the sleeve and it is slowing down as I approach my goal weight. When I had my MGB, I was told that Dr. R. is using a 6 foot bypass as a standard starting point to consider due to the fact that so many earlier patients who had less have been coming back for revisions to have more bypassed.  In my case, as a lightweight, I feel he made a huge error in judgment when choosing a 6 foot bypass for me.  I lost 112 lbs. at my most, and that was with eating 3,500 to 4,000 calories a day to try not to lose ground as I waited for my revision. For anyone considering the MGB, especially if you need to lose 100 lbs. or less, I would caution you to get a commitment from Dr. R. the length of bypass he will do.  I would have done better, probably, with only a 3 foot bypass.  Yes, there are people out there who have had a 6 foot bypass and only lost 32 lbs. But, I would have rather had to work to get the last 20 lbs. off, than to have  my life threatened with malnourishment and a BMI of 15.8 and need a revision to save my life. My insurance did not cover MGB.  It does not cover any WLS,  But my revision was covered for the most part.  Although, they called the night before the surgery and said they would not automatically cover it, but would wait to see what was done with me after my surgery and then decide.  This whole experience has taken a huge emotional toll on me.  From going from elation at the original weight loss, to dread as I started losing too much, to anger as Dr. R. essentially brushed me off, in person and long distance, and would not cooperate with releasing my medical records until I reported him to the Nevada State Board of Medical Examiners.  To now, I feel relief that I actually did not die and I can look forward to getting back to a healthy weight and get back to living life. If anyone wants additional information on my story, you can check out my profile or contact me here at OH.

I am here also. I had my Mini bypass in Nov 2003. In May 2006 I had to have it converted to a full RNY due to the perforated ulcer that was caused by the way the surgeon set up my mini bypass.

Dr. David Hargroder in Joplin, Missouri does the mgb.  Can you take out a loan, get the surgery then have your insurance pay you back?  Check your retirement.  I am borrowing from it and paying back into it.  Mutual funds, stocks, sell something.  Just ideas. Jo

Topic: Important Message from ObesityHelp
We are thankful to have members like you helping us to maintain and build our community. As you well know, our membership is full of diverse personalities, opinions, experiences, and knowledge.  Throughout the years we have built numerous forums in an effort to support your interests and surgery paths. It is important to ObesityHelp.com staff that our members have a safe place to learn, share, and connect.

Recently, we have had an overwhelming number of report posts and email complaints about varying issues concerning the surgery type forums.  It is apparent that some of our members are finding it difficult to view or dialogue in a select few forums of their choice, without fear of personal attacks, internet trolling, and angry banter.  Having any of our members feel isolated, attacked or subjected to abuse of our features goes against all that we stand for as a community.  Our members deserve better!

We encourage you to talk about your personal surgery experiences, and to educate and support one another, however, we do not condone hate speech, abuse, impersonation, intimidating others, and invading the privacy of our membership.  As we move forward, we do not want to become a heavily moderated website, but it is important for the community to help us spot serious violations as well as to refrain from participating in or inciting “flame wars.”  Please report the abuse so we can look into it, eliminate it if need be, and make future development plans. We ask that before you report, that you reflect on if it is true abuse vs. something that you personally do not like or agree with. The “report post” option submits the post for evaluation; it does not mean you will get a reply back.  If we deem action is necessary you will be able to see that via the removal or edit.  We are aware that you may not agree with our decisions or the time in which we deal with them, but rest assured we are taking actions in some manner to try and make your experience fair and in line with our efforts.

In conclusion, here is a summary of how you can help better the OH community:

  • Don’t respond or participate in “flame wars” -Report them, don’t support them!
  • Don’t interact with “internet trolls”; they feed on your attention– Your best recourse is to ignore.
  • Don’t take other member's photos and use them to harass or mock.  We do not condone this and when it is reported, removals will be made.
  • Don’t forget this is an all ages’ community.  Flag your images appropriately and select your privacy and adult content settings to best suite your personal user experience.
  • Do respond to message board posts in an encouraging, informative or supportive manner. Keep in mind each person has his or her own interaction preferences.
  • Do utilize the block tool when need be.  This is an enhancement that many requested; utilizing it is your choice. We encourage you to take the opportunity to create your own personal desired atmosphere.
  • Do Blog, Blog, Blog!  The words you write may help to inspire and educate others. Posting your opinions there will allow people to comment to you directly.
  • Do submit B&A photos.  Take part in sticky posts such as Post-Op Wow Moments and Who Inspires You.  These are opportunities for you to share your successes.
  • Do enhance your profile with your experiences, add your photos, and build up your personal support network by inviting people as friends.

What’s New at OH?

We have many new items planned for release this year! Currently we have a few items that are in testing and should be available soon:

Profanity filter for the forums: You will be able to adjust your
settings. (The same setting that is currently in place for photos.)

Move thread:  This is on the administration side and will allow
us to move topics that are getting out of hand and detracting
     from the individual forums.

OH Groups:  This is in beta testing currently with the Support
Group leaders.  Eventually in a future release, OH Members
will have the ability to create and moderate their own groups.

There’s more to come! We’re working to develop new features and enhancements, while trying to keep in mind the most fitting solutions to overall wants and needs.  Thank you for being a member of ObesityHelp.com and for your commitment to helping us to maintain and build a community rich in resources, support, and empowerment!

There are other sources as well. www.mgbhelp.com www.clos.net Both sites give detailed explanations of all the WLS choices as well as the mini gastric bypass so that you can make an informed decision.  Research, research and research again.  Ask alot of questions.  Find one that works for you. MGB worked for me.

Hi Jo, I read the MGB MO posts online. I am considered a slow loser even though I have lost about 60 pounds in 4 months. Good luck!
