Hello, I don't know of any who do the mini-gastric-bypass there. However most people with OHIP travel to Florida or Las Vegas to get the surgery. Please go to www.mgbhelp.com and www.clos.net to find out more about it. Good luck! -Van

Topic: Gastric Bypass In Toronto HELP
Hi Everyone,     I'm new to this site, my doctor recently referred me for a lap-band, and the surgeon was ready to do the procedure for  may30th,08, but I'm unable to get the procedure because I am on Ontario disablity and cannot get funding. So he suggested Gastric bypass surgery because it supposedly is covered by OHIP, I was just wondering if anyone had any information on Surgeons in the Toronto area that perform the surgery, and how I go about getting funding for it. I've done lots of research so I know the risks, and how the surgery is performed, but am having trouble finding a surgeon.Any help would be greatly appreciated *Hugs* Shannon

Hi ((((((Emma)))))))), I came across this information on the web put out by Newsweek Showcase who has nothing to do with Dr. Rutledge, The Centre for Laparoscopic Obesity Surgery or anyone who has had or supports the Mini Gastric Bypass surgery.  I copied and pasted it for you.  The reason I am doing this is so that you are well informed about having any kind of weight loss surgery.  It is best to make an informed decision on as much research as possible and to not make a decision about having MGB based on anger. Best of luck to you Emma. Linda Mini Gastric-bypass Weight Loss Surgery 30 Minute Surgery May Resolve Severe Obesity and Help Deal with Deadly Epidemic of Obesity Sweeping Nation

The World Health Organization (WHO) reports that the U.S. obesity epidemic puts millions at risk from obesity related diseases such as diabetes, high blood pressure, high cholesterol, heart attack stroke, cancer and more. According to the WHO an escalating epidemic of obesity is sweeping the U.S. and many other countries in the world. Further they state "if action is not taken now millions of people will develop diseases and other serious life threatening health disorders that will lead hundreds of thousands of deaths in America."

Many are now turning to surgery as a treatment for severe obesity. A variety of operations are being offered but the complications and problems of the various types of available surgery leave much to be desired.

The Mini Gastric Bypass (MGB) is a minimally invasive, short, simple, successful and inexpensive laparoscopic gastric bypass weight loss surgery. The operation usually takes an average of 30 min., hospitalization usually less than 24 hours. The Mini Gastric Bypass has been shown to be low risk, it has excellent long term weight loss, there is minimal pain and when necessary can be easily reversed or revised. People from all fifty states across America and around the world are choosing the MGB as the "Best Choice in Bariatric Surgery."

Dr. Rutledge, following a twenty year career as a professor of surgery at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, is the innovative surgeon behind the MGB. Dr. Rutledge is the most highly recommended weight loss surgeon on the independent, nationally recognized ObesityHelp.com web site.

In a recent independent controlled prospective randomized study Dr. Rutledge's MGB was shown to outperform the standard "RNY gastric bypass." In a head to head comparison the MGB had shorter operative times, fewer complications and weight loss as good as or better than the standard "RNY gastric bypass." In addition an independent analysis of the outcomes of the MGB by three certified public accounting (CPA) firms confirm the MGB has excellent weight loss, patient satisfaction and resolution of obesity associated medical illness.

Dr. Rutledge has performed over 2,600 cases and surgeons across the U.S. and around the world are adopting the new MGB technique. Surgeons and hospitals are now offering the MGB in North Carolina, Florida, Michigan, Missouri, Arkansas, California as well as around the world in Mexico, Spain, Brazil and Taiwan. New hospitals are planning to offer the MGB in Louisiana, Texas, Nevada and New York. In Canada the Ontario Health Service is approving patients to come to the U.S. for the MGB. As Susan Bell the 2,000th MGB said "Imagine, my surgery took only 15 minutes, I had no pain, was up and out of bed walking two hours after surgery and was out of the hospital less than 24 hours later!"

Costs are always a major issue. According to a recent USA Today article weight loss surgery usually costs about $24,000. In contrast the total cost for the MGB is only $17,000.

Dr. Rutledge is now proctoring a new surgeon and creating a new hospital site for the MGB in Los Angeles California. For more information visit the web site http://clos.net or call 909-731-0051.

Emma, I think that you are very misinformed and ignorant.  How dare you say half the things you have said about this surgery and Dr. Rutledge after only hearing him speak for a couple of hours!  I have lost 103lbs in just over 8 months and have not been sick or have had any complication what so ever, and I credit it all to Dr. Rutledge, I didn't do this on my own!  If I could have done it on my own I would have never had surgery!  A lot of the things  you have written about are indeed false and I think you need to do some more research. Like this comment:

"Furthermore, yeah your right, 3 deaths out of 4000, for HIM. He even admitted that he had trained other doctors to perform the surgery and htey were losing patients."

And you have many more "ignorant" comments through your post.  You go ahead and have the RNY!  It just may end up being the biggest mistake you will ever make, or you can diet and exercise!

Good Luck with that!

Hey Emma,

I'm Patty, a post-op from 2003. Everyone's entitled to an opinion - I've often been blasted because my opinion is different from the mainstream too. That said, facts are facts and one needs to isolate the issues. I've learned over the years to focus strictly on my MGB surgery and what it has done for me.  It's too bad that you aren't being openminded to the SURGERY and it's benefits vs the negativity you feel from a person. Perhaps you are not thrilled with Dr. Rutledge but the fact is he is a skilled surgeon with a heck of a lot more experience in rearranging plumbing than any RnY surgeon I've heard of. As for old timers gaining weight...you presumably haven't joined the Yahoo groups of DSers, Banders, and RnYers who have gained almost ALL of their weight back. It is true, we regain, and that is no secret. It is in our manual. The average regain is 20% of the weight one loses. As far as experiencing health problems, you are talking to someone who has had a lot right here - and I can assure you that very little of it has to do with THE MGB! It is ANY weight loss surgery, period! Again, I encourage you to hang around some Yahoo support groups filled with old time RnYers! It would blow your mind. You aren't scaring people away, but I think that before you potentially find yourself in a serious mess for public slander without being able to back up your statements, you should probably try to direct your emotions appropriately and stick to the real issue, and that is you said you felt slighted. Hardly a reason to defame someone's character when you haven't got all of the facts.

As I had said before, each person has the 'right' to their opinion, including you.  What I am reading in what you are saying is not just your opinion, but it is the style in which you express your opinion.  You carry alot of anger and lash out with such venom when you feel someone has let you down.   This is one situation in your life.  Is this also the same pattern you demonstrate with others in your life when you feel hurt , unjustified or let down?  Think about it.  It's really sad, just how angry and bitter you truly are.   Anger is a secondary emotion as a result of some other feeling.  It could be fear, guilt, shame, hurt.  Sometimes, it is easier to be angry than to feel the feelings underneath anger which makes it alot safer to lash out. For what ever reasons, you have had to learn to survive and not feel safe in the world.  That is not a bad thing.  It just is.  Underneath all that anger is just a scared little girl who has been hurt and let down by adults in her life.   That little girl needs acceptance, nurturing and love and you are the only person who can give that to her.  I am sorry to hear about your Dad's struggle with liver disease.  My brother passed away ten years ago, 12 weeks after his second liver  transplant and my husband had a liver transplant four years ago.  My husband was in a coma going into transplant and he is doing so well. I understand what they go  through and how difficult it can be for family members.  I hope he has a good hepatologist that is on the ball.  I don't know where you live but London, Ontario has one of the best transplant units in North America.  Not everyone who goes to the transplant clinic in London need a transplant but they are right up to par in  technology and treatment.  I will keep him, yourself and the rest of your family in my prayers.  Linda

Hey Its not just you, its everyone here, I mean, Im being virtually told off becasue I have a differing opinion. Almost everyone here thinks hes all high and mighty, when hes not. The weight loss you guys experienced is because of YOU, not him. I wrote here to give another opinion, because everywhere yo usee, its always praises, and Ive found out some intersting things on searshing the man himself, and not the surgery. The yahoo groups I found werent helpful because when I went to post my opinion, I was trown out of the group, and it made me wonder how many other people were pushed aside because of a negative opinion. As for Scott who said that 999 out of 1000 would say that he was amazing, not true, I posted this note on another forum on here, and many other people have the same opinions as I do. Furthermore, yeah your right, 3 deaths out of 4000, for HIM. He even admitted that he had trained other doctors to perform the surgery and htey were losing patients. The surgery was performed over 4000 times, but not by him, the deaths that I am talking about are for the MGB in general. He worked for you guys, thats fine, but myself, Im going for the RNY becasue after what I saw and felt and experienced, I would not want to be under his knife, especially the things I read about him. Furthermore, not enough research has been done about the surgery in the long run. There are quite a few people that had the surgery 7-10 years ago that have gained the weight back and are experiencing several health problems due to the surgery. Also shame on me for putting this up incase it scared people away? I think the other way, people are smart and can think for themselves, they should have more than one opinion being spread around them. they should hear good opinions and bad before they make their decision. I just happen to be playing devils advocate. its hard to find bad news on rutledge.. why? becasue he gets his employees to get rid of the notes ect... he covers his tracts. If a person REALLY wants the surgery, they should hear about ALL aspects of the surgery and the man himself. like I said, even if this prooves to be teh best surgery years down the road, its like a watch... or any product or service. you wouldnt buy the best thing out there, if your server was a douche.

Hi ((((((Emma))))))), Your perception is way off base in your understanding of what I wrote.  It sure was not my intent to come across as being 'offensive' or as being 'high and mighty over you'.  I am just not that kind of person.  You are absolutely right.  You have the right to your opinions just like any one else.   I am just happy to hear you are getting the help you need for your anxiety disorder.    Keep up the good work and wishing you the very best.  Linda
