Topic: RE: Laparoscopic Sleeve Gastrectomy versus the Lap Band
Hi,  I am still trying to find the right surgery for me. I believe that the LSG is the first stage of the DS surgery. I think you should ask this question on the DS board and the Lap Band board. you will get very differ ant opinions. This board discusses a radically differ ant surgery.  The MGB is not similar to either surgery you are considering.

Hi,

Which gastric bypass procedure is she wanting?  Most of us down below don't have to fill out our insurance forms except when we enroll in the insurance of choice.  After that, we are usually given a card that we present whenever we want to see a doctor which has all the insurance information on it.  So, I suppose she would need to research which procedure she wants, find a good surgeon that has a great pre- and post-op support program.  Then see if their staff can help her with the forms.  I know this isn't much help, but I think our insurance process is a bit different.

Clueless about weight loss and weight loss surgery of any kind.

Hello,

Well, first of all, the lap band is the less invasive.  Good results the first five years or so, but after that, success rates are not that good.  The gastric sleeve is very invasive.  It has some side affects that you have to watch for.  If you try to stretch the sleeve area by constantly over eating, it can tear the sleeve and then you will be in big trouble.  So total commitment for the rest of your life is necessary for this procedure.  Do some more research, particularly long term results, side affects etc.  I am sure you will make a choice you can live with.  Just read, read, read, ask, ask, ask.  Just like you are doing.  You will hear good and bad and that is important in your final choice.

I need to choose between a Lap Band or a Laparoscopic Sleeve Gastrectomy, and I would really appreciate if someone can give some direction what will help me make the right decision.

Topic: Do you know what your 'ideal' body weight is? xpost

There is a lot of discussion about the percentage of excess body weight we might lose with any type of WLS. The average percentage of excess body weight lost with RNY, the most common of the WLS' is 60 to 80 percent. Generally, if you lose less than 50 percent or regain to a point that you are at 50 percent, you are no longer considered successful.

So... How, do we know how much we are 'supposed' weigh? Sometimes our Dr's will tell us what we should weigh, some don't. BMI tables are helpful, but they only tell us part of the story. In order to really know what are ideal body weight 'range' is, we need to also factor in our frame size. How many times have we thought we had a large frame? Some people actually do. I am just over the board from medium to large framed, but I use the medium frame weight guidelines for determining my weight range.

The following website link can help you to quantify what your 'ideal' body weight should be, so that you can calculate your percentage of excess body weight loss should be: http://www.healthcentral.com/diet-exercise/ideal-body-weight-3146-143.html

Please know that I'm not making any judgements about what YOU 'should' weigh. Your goal weight is between you and your Dr. You may decide that you want to be an 'average' weight, which may be different from a 'normal' weight, which may also be different that an 'ideal' weight. As long as you are healthy and able to live your life well, whatever weight you set as your goal is great!
