Topic: RE: Surgery booked for two weeks time.

Hi guys thanks for posting, I didn't realise anyone had.  We are a small bunch hey. :)

I am having my surgery in exactly a week and I am not sure if I am absolutely ecstatic about it or absolutely petrified lol it kind of swings.  It's nice to hear others have made it to the other side without regrets.

What have you been told about taking Nsaids? Carbonated drinks? Alcohol? My surgeon said I could have the odd wine or beer after about three months.  I am not a big drinker but we are travelling through Europe next year so I am wondering if you have found this?   What vitamin supplements have you been told to take?   How much food do you eat at a sitting and how often?

Hey, I'm in Adelaide and had my mgb 3 weeks ago and have lost 8kg. I was my surgeons 1st mgb and have had no complications, everything has gone well and feels normal so I'm very happy that I had a fast recovery. The mgb is safer and simple than Roux-ny and also has slightly more weight loss because it bypasses more of the small bowel.

As for your addiction, a dietician can help with that, but that restriction and feeling of fullness from the grehlin being reduced in this surgery will greatly help with your hunger anyway.

I just signed up in the hopes that I would find others having or who have had the Mini Gastric Bypass.  This does not seem to be a widely undertaken procedure which is making me nervous. My surgeon here in Australia has just recently started to perform these as well.  I was meant to have this done in January next year but my surgery days has moved up to early December.  Are the after effects similar to the RNY bypass ext I really feel like I need support to keep on track as I have struggled with food and weight problems for 20 years.

There is nothing I can tell u to make u feel any better, I am going thru pre op diet starting tomorrow, and is basically three 8 oz protein shakes daily, plenty of clear liquids, like water, diet Snapple, crystal lite flavors for water, sugar free jello, sugar free Popsicles. After surgery will be two more weeks of the same, after two weeks will get reinforcement with vitamins that were recommended. Hope this helps

I am so sorry to hear of your medical problems. Did you have RNY or MGB? I had MGB in 2012, but my surgeon does not require a pre-op diet and, to my knowledge, the few surgeons who perform MGB also do not require a pre-op diet. If your gastric bypass was RNY, you'll probably get a much better response if you post on the RNY board. Good luck and healing to you.

MGB is similar to RNY in that it is restrictive and malabsorptive. The biggest technical differences are that the MGB only requires a single anastomosis and the new stomach is more like a 4-6 oz. sleeve created along the lesser curvature of the stomach. The remnant stomach remains intact, so the surgery is reversible and revisable. Here is a short animated video from my surgeon's website that explains it more precisely: http://mgb-surgery.com/procedure2012.htm There is also a dizzying amount of information on Dr. Rutledge's (the doctor who developed the technique) website at http://www.clos.net/

Recovery time is about a week, but some people say they need another week or two to get their energy back while others say they could have gone back to work in two days. I went back to work exactly one week after surgery and did fine, but I am an child/adolescent mental health therapist, so my job is more taxing on my brain than my body. I think it depends on the job a person is returning to and whether or not they had any complications (I did not and have not had any complications).

I eat and supplement like an RNYer (80-100 g protein; multis, calcium, D, B12, and iron+C throughout the day). The first two weeks post-op are primarily liquids and yogurt, the next two are soft foods, and then it's just a matter of adding foods one at time to make sure they sit well. And, of course, exercise on most days of the week.

I had a RNY. What is so different about the mini gastric bypass?
