5 Days Post Op Gastric Bypass

It truly doesn't seem like its been 5 days since my surgery at Palms of Pasadena Hospital. There have been pros and cons, but for this particular post, I just want you all to know, that I made it through. It's been 5 days and I'm back to normal life.

There were so many questions I didn't think to ask, didn't know I needed to ask, so many things I had no idea where important and didn't see discussed, but was always someone here on this forum to jump in at a moments notice for support... day or night.

On Facebook, I gave up to the minute details even as I was about to be wheeled in to the operating room. (My phone wouldn't let me log into this site, as I don't have a smart phone. I'll cut and paste it at a later date.

Advice to the pre-ops...

1) Give it GREAT thought b4 jumping into this. Just because you've been to all the doctor appointments, taken all the tests and have been trying for a very long time to get your insurance company to approve you, doesn't mean you have to go through with it. Just like a wedding. Once you're in... in you're in!

2) Once you've made that decision and are in the operating room. Batton down the hatches. You're in for a bumpy 2 days. PROS: You'll make it through, no matter what you're thinking at that stage.

There's so much more I need to sa y and I'll do so as soon as possible:)

Remember... Protein is your friend:) lol

Welcome to the other side and your journey to good health.  Find a good support group.  This is very important.  Ask ask ask.  Knowledge will eliminate many fears and doubts.  The more you know, the easier it will be to face each day.  Keep us posted.

Clueless about weight loss and weight loss surgery of any kind.

Hi Marcy,

I am 7 days post op and you are right, everyone must do some investigation.  10 years ago I went to a seminar and I did not like they way they did the surgery at the time, so I decided I would wait.  Then, as the analithcal person I am, I had to chart things, just medical stuff, then I decided I think today I will sign up for another seminar.  First I did back ground checks on the sureoons that people did recommend, wanted to search for sanctions, malpractice suits and deaths (during and after surgery).

I picked a surgeon who has been doing this for a very long time has many surgeries under his belt and never had a staple leak. I picked the correct doctor, he was very picky about everything, even when he came to the hospital to see me, he made sure everything was correct and in place. While I was there he did dress down a nurse for my name plate not being correct since I was just moved to that room.

I spoke with nutritionists and did research about the surgery and how much I would be restricted to eating, and if I was mentally ready for that.  *This was a yr prior to the surgery*  When I had to do the liquid diet for 2 weeks, I asked questions before I even had to do this, I actually asked at the seminar.  I asked why do I have to do this, what is the purpose and will this benefit me?
My question was answered with the following, 2 week liquid diet will help reduce the fat around the liver and soften as well, since the liver has to me moved out of the way to perform the surgery.  I was like wow.  My doctor is so great, that the office has set up an email box for all questions, I send in the morning, and receive a reply with in 5 min. I send i the afternoon, I receive a reply with in 5 min.  That is great contact with the surgeon, do not have to wait for a phone call.  So when I figured my surgery would be, I wanted to be on the liquid diet longer than 2 weeks, I wanted to reduce alot of fat around the liver and really have the liver soft.  I am so glad I did that. I lost alot of extra weight and that made me feel better.  I am so happy I had this surgery, I eat 1 TBSP of food, have my 60 grams of protein daily and have a total of 64oz of liquid.  It is easy to do once you get a plan going and exercise is even easier as well.  I have to wait until my 3 week post op visit before I jump back in the pool, looking forward to that.

This surgery has saved my life, well at least will add a few more good years to my life so I can feel great and look great.  If anyone asked me if I had to do it allover again would I?  YOU BET I would!!  After the surgery I had absolutly no pain at all, I was surprised.  When my doctor came to visit me the next day he says to me, "MY OR staff was braggin on you."  That made me feel good.  I had a positive attitude going in with a big smile and I told them I hope I can come out of surgery with a big smile and when I heard the nurse say to me in a soft voice, "Deb wake up, it's all over."  I sported a HUGE smile.  I wanted to get up and walk right then, I know walking would get me to recovery faster.  I had to wait til I got to my room and then 3 hrs later I was allowed to get up and walk.  I walked alot in the hospital.  The other patients there were saying, "Hey don't walk so fast, we can't keep up."  My energy level is so much more increased.  I use my treadmill in the morning and walk for 1 mile.  In the afternoon my husband and I take the dog for a walk and walk approx. another 2 miles.  I love it, I love my life even more after WLS.

I hope you and everyone else who has the WLS has a perfect experience as I did.  I hope future people who are waiting for the WLS have a perfect wonderful expereince.

Take Care and good luck to you and everyone,

Deb

Hi Deb!
I'm so glad you had a good experience:) Not wanting to look at one more chocolate protein shake, I headed to the health food store hoping to find an array of choices. In addition to 60-80grams of protein a day, I wouldn't mind a little flavor and I wanted every sip to count.

The staff was somewhat condisending, which I didn't expect, but who cares, I decided. It boiled down to, there weren't any flavored protein soups, like I wanted, but my 23 year old son who accompanied me suggested that I get an unflavored protein powder (in addition to my chocolate, of course..i mean.. a girl needs her chocolate) so I can mix it with vegetable or chicken broth. So, thats my new thing... I know at this stage (I'm 8 days out) I'm permitted all liquids, very thin cream soup, etc... But I'm looking for more variety.

Suggestions?

Hey Marcy,

Yes I do have a suggestion for protein.  It's called the lil shot.  Its like 2 oz shot of fruit flavored protein shot.  Has 30 grams of protein per shot.  1 gram of sugar and I forget how many calories.  I am going to get one today they sell them at walmart they are 1.98 each.  I will let you know how they taste later today.

seems to be a similar product.  This is the link from walmart for the one I was going to try.
http://www.walmart.com/catalog/product.do?product_id=10322370.  And if this link doesn't work, just go to walmart.com and in the search type in protein shots and you will go right to it.  It gives all the specifications and other info on it.
