Just left the bariatric office in Reno, NV.  My consultation was very informative but I'm still not sure if lapband or bypass is the thing for me.

Can anyone pipe in here and tell me if my original idea for the lapband was the correct choice?

I'm 5 ft six with about 100 pounds to lose.

Any help would be appreciated.

I am new to this too.My understanding is with the lapband you usually only lose 45% of your goal. With the others you may lose 75% or so. Personally I am going for the 75%.

Hi,

Well, this is a personal choice.  I had the MGB almost 11 years ago and I would do it again in a heart beat.  It is an extremely powerful surgery and statistics show it being very successful.  The RNY is good but many folks tend to gain a lot back.  The lapband is ok.  Less invasive but it will take a lot of fortitude to lose all you want and keep it off.  Do some more research.  Talk to as many people as you can on the OH boards.  Search yourself and which ever procedure gives you a sense of right, go for it.

Clueless about weight loss and weight loss surgery of any kind.

Thank you so much everyone,
"pouched", the link you provided was very informative and gave me greater understanding of my options. Thank you,

I will be attending a support group here in town to get feedback from those who have had the procedure. I think I will get personal experience to add to my info collection

I had the lapband surgery 8 years ago. I spent most of 2009 in and out of hospitals because the lap band perferated my stomach. I almost died. Since then I have heard of 27 more cases of the same problems from within my state. There could be a lot more but I have no way of checking other states. Go with bypass. I lost weight with the lap band but have since gained it back and more. The lap band weight loss is gradual not quickly like the bypass. Good luck.

My partner had the gastric bypass 6 years ago, lost 100 pounds quickly over the first 6 months post op,  but has put back 30 pounds over the year.....She has had success but she wishes she had the lab band because it can be tightened...

I have the band and I'm glad I did the band and not the bypass....

Good luck with your decision!

I had lap band Jan 4th. From reading other responses, it sounds like a personal choice. I wish I had had the gastric by pass.  I watch my friends with the weight just falling off and mine is so slow.  I was probably not a good candidate for lap band because I am a snacker, but my surgeon felt that at age 68, he didn't want to do a by pass on me and because I only needed to loose about 80 to 90 pounds.

I immediately lost about 25 pounds and then it has slowed to a crawl of nothing for the last month, but I am off of all but one small dose of medication for BP, stopped all diabetes meds and have had no reflux problems.  I did start heavy exercise too soon and had a lot of pain in my left side below the ribs.  I worried I had actually damaged something.

So, after no matter which you have, start with just walking for a few months, no crunches like I did.  I was fine before then. It all really major surgery.

Good luck,  I would do it all again.
