how does doctor determine how much to bipass?
Hi,
If he/she is a seasoned surgeon in their profession, they will have their guidelines down pat and be able to determine how much by their long experience in working in their field. They know their stuff. The unknown comes into play when it is a fact that everyone is different. There is no way to know EXACTLY how a patient is going to react to the surgery (slow loser, fast loser, etc).
I hope this helps.

Dr Rutledge in Vegas generally goes by the patient's weight at time of surgery. I was 210 and had a 5.5 ft. bypass. My roomate was 180 and had a 3.5 ft bypass. The rest in our group had 6 ft and 7 ft bypassed. They ranged from 230 - 270. The 7 ft individual had other major medical problems (severe diabetes) so he was more agressive with her bypass. Dr R says he has to do an educated guess on all his patients but due to his experience, he usually gets it right. One thing I like about Dr R is that if he has guessed wrong, he owns up. I also understand that he is doing his best under complicated cir****tances to come up with the right figure.
