Can someone confirm MGB info?

Hi,
My mom had a Mini Gastric Bypass earlier  this year (March, I think) and has done really well with it, has lost basically all her excess weight, and is very happy. Recently I went for my first appointment for another weight loss procedure and my mom went with me for support. We were looking at diagrams of some of the different WL surgeries, however there was not one of the MGB since my surgeon doesn't perform that procedure. My mom said that the way her doctor did the procedure was to pull up her large intestine and attach it to the stomach tube. I told her several times that "no" the attachment was to a lower section of the small intestine (I'm familiar with the procedure since I had looked into having it years ago). She's convinced that she's correct since she believes that this is what she was told by her surgeon. I'm thinking there might have been a language barrier issue since she had it done in South America (Colombia).

I've found some diagrams of the MGB on the internet that I'm going to show her, but I want to get confirmation from folks who know that the way she thinks her surgery is done is impossible. From what I understand, absorption takes place mainly in the small intestine. So if her entire small intestine was bypassed and the stomach tube was attached to the large intestine, she couldn't really absorb anything and she'd probably be dead by now. It's not that I'm trying to be proven right, I just think it's really important to accurately understand the changes that were made in your body and the configuration of your new internal anatomy.

Any advice or guidance would be appreciated.
Thanks, Renee

 Hello,

I just have my MGB done in Cancun Mexico, and you are right, they have to attached the pouch to some place in the small intestine.

Hope it helps.

Hi,

The actual connection is done after 6' or so of the small intestines is bypassed.  That is the new connection point.  The small intestines is where calories are absorbed thus the bypass is needed to limit the absorption.

Clueless about weight loss and weight loss surgery of any kind.

Thanks, I felt sure she must have misunderstood what she was told. Now if I can just get her believe that what I'm telling her is right.  LOL!

Thanks a bunch.

Renee,
You are right---there is know way they attached the stomach at the large intestine.  They attach it approx 6 ft down in the small intestines---bypassing the large portions of obsorbtion that makes to gain weight.  I am having my MGB on Dec 11, 2009.  I have several friends that have had the procedure.  Also there is a video on u-tube of the procedure that you can show your mom.

Thanks, Cindy.
I'll try showing her the video. I'll be staying with her for the month I recoup after getting the DS in two weeks. It's kind of funny that she would have it so mixed up since she was a nurse for years (RN), but it must have something to do with the language barrier with her Colombian doc.
Good luck with your procedure!!

Gastric bypass surgery takes approximately four hours. Usually under general anesthesia and need an overnight-five days stay in hospital. The patient feels full faster because the structure of the stomach has been re-size or switch.
