The military forum is kind of dead. You may want to go to the general discussion forum. That might help. I check this forum every so often. But you always have support here.

This was the approval to see the surgeon. You have to have a series of test done before you are approved for the surgery. Once the tests are finished, all the results are sent to Tricare for approval. After I had all my test results submitted, it took Tricare 7 days to approve me for the surgery.

I was told via telephone by Tricare that I was approved to see gastric bypass surgeon for initial consult visit + 5 additional visits. That's great and it get's me started. What I wanted know was if this was the authorization for surgery or just for evaluations. If not, how long does it take to get an authorization approved?

Thank you very much. I received a referral to a bariatric surgeon about 40 minutes from me.

Erica, Hello, Check to see which bariatric surgeons in the area accept Tricare, and research them. Go to their informational seminar (these are usually free) Get the referral from your PCM for your first choice. I had surgery 6 months ago, and getting approved is relatively simple. You will need the following: These you will need referral from your PCM: I would make an appointment to talk with him/her and explain what you are wanting to do, and that you need their support. If they are not willing, then get another PCM who will. Psyc eval. Nutritionist/Dietician eval. (this may not be covered by Tricare) Pulmonologist eval. - this may entail a sleep study to check for sleep apnea Have the PCM order the following blood test: Full Chem panel Cholesteral TSH or full thyroid panel Hypolori - this is to check for bacteria known to cause ulcers. Check B vitamins, protein, and anything else not listed. This will give you a head start on what is needed. The surgeon may require some other things but this is the basics. Good luck.

Topic: Hi all...
Hey all, I am Sheri and new here. I am a military spouse. I am getting "realized" soon, and am just looking for some support of other military wives that have been "through it". My husband is deployed so I am going at this alone and while he is as supportive as anyone can be from the other side of the globe, he has never had to deal with weight issues, and lets face it, a 10 minute call twice a week doesn't really help with the other 5 days! Anyway, Hi!!
