Topic: Active Duty Gastric Sleeve

Can anyone tell me if they or someone they know was approved for any bariatric surgery while in the military? Yes I know it's a bar to enlistment but I have heard of AD members being approved. Thanks

Topic: tricare---would i be approved and other questions?
Hello.  I am new here and have a few questions.  I am 30 years old and have been obese much of my life.  Nonstop since i was about 16 and before that i was overweight for ages 13 14 15.... I currenlty weigh 260 pounds and I am 5'11.  I have sleep apnea and also severe knee pain for which i just discovered i have arthritis in my knees.  I have a history of high blood pressure starting at age 18 and it ended shortly before I turned 30.  I was pregnant and gave birth a couple of weeks before my 30th birthday and with my pregnancy my HBP disappeared and has not returned.  So now that i have given some of my background, here are my questions.  Now, I in know way mean this to be like oh im better than everyone else, however, at my height and weight , am I "too small" for gastric bypass surgery?  As crazy as that sounds.  Are you able to have children after having gastric bypass surgery? I cannot seem to imagine the logistics of this since people eat so much less after the surgery.  And, last, I have tricare prime so any advice, suggestions, and ins/outs of how much is covered and how it gets approved etc. would be really appreciated.  :)  Thanks,

Amanda

I know you posted this back in August, but can you tell what happened with your friend? I'm on Active Duty and have been searching for these so-called people who have been approved to have the surgery on AD. I'm Air Force and my doctors are fighting very hard to get the surgery approved because of all the comorbid factors surrounding my care.  I am wondering if there's someone that did get it approved an how. Hoping since this was August, your friend found something out.  I know there are waivers for just about everything. It's getting the waivers to the right people in the right way.  I've seen just about everything waived in my 9 years of service, so as my doctors would say, NO because of an AFI or a TRICARE standard does not just mean NO.  A patient's health still comes first.

Thank You!

@weg4th5- I'm just starting my pre op process and my surgeon's office told me today that I may have to pay for my Upper GI and Ultrasound of my gallbladder.  I don't understand why Tricare isn't covering these??

Not sure about other branches, but I cant see it being any different from the Navy.  You are NOT allowed to have any form of weight loss surgery, be it lap band, gastric bypass or gastric sleeve, etc, as the future dietary restrictions would make you undeployable (at least thats what they told him).  My husband has been trying for YEARS to have it done and is actually in the process of being "asked to retire early" for not meeting BCA standards.  I know they have even kicked out several on our current base  that went to private "in town" doctors and paid for it themselves to circumvent the military restrictions.  If you find out how... please let me know to try and "salvage" whats left of his career.  But with sleep apnea, high blood pressure, osteoarthritis, carpal tunnel in both arms, 3 bad cervical discs, and now we just found out... flat feet!.. they wouldnt approve him for lap band or gastric... so I would also LOVE to know what qualifies as "medically necessary" then.

I know this is a long shot but I'm gonna ask.  If any of you know of anyone who has had WLS while on Active Duty through Tricare please PM me.  My friend has been given a referral and letter of medical necessity from her MILITARY doctor but I have no idea what to  expect next.  I know the regs and all that but I also know that with the military there are always loopsholes and waivers.  Any help is greatly appreciated.
Thanks!

PS - I really have researched so I know ALL about the posted TriCare policy and the DoD regs...looking for someone with actual REAL WORLD experience or knowledge on this!  I know people have had it done, just looking for HOW.  Thanks!!

Topic: Metropolitan Height Weight scale - what end of range does Tricare look for?
I have my first consult with the surgeon this week and I am so nervous that Tricare is going to say that I dont qualify over a couple of pounds.  I am 5'4" and weigh 235.  When they look at the chart do they use the low end which is 124 or the high end which is 138?  Also, this is for the medium build - how is that determined?  Please help!!  I really want to know what to expect walking into this appt.

Thanks!

Pulled this right of the TriCare Covered Services page......they won't approve the DS is biliopancreatic surgery (see below)

Gastric Bypass

TRICARE covers gastric bypass, gastric stapling and gastroplasty to include vertical banded gastroplasty and laparoscopic adjustable gastric banding (Lap-Band surgery) is covered only when the beneficiary meets one of the following conditions:

  • Is 100 pounds over ideal weight for height and bone structure and has one of these associated conditions: diabetes mellitus, hypertension, cholecystitis, narcolepsy, Pickwickian syndrome, hypothalamic disorders or severe arthritis of the weight-bearing joints
  • Is 200 percent or more over ideal weight for height and bone structure
  • Has had intestinal bypass or other surgery for obesity and because of complications, requires another surgery (takedown)

TRICARE does not cover:

  • Nonsurgical treatment of obesity, morbid obesity, dietary control or weight reduction
  • Biliopancreatic bypass, gastric bubble or balloon for the treatment of morbid obesity

Note for Active Duty Service Members: Bariatric surgery represents a major and permanent change in your digestive system that requires strict adherence to a specific dietary regimen that may interfere with operational deployment. A history of bariatric surgery is already a bar to military service and receiving bariatric surgery while on active duty may be grounds for separation. For more information, view the Health Affairs Policy 07-006.
