Tri-care does not cover lap band surgery, so you may want to clarify this with your surgeon.

That is so wonderful that your consulation went so well!!! But, Leann is right. Tricare does not cover the lapband. If I were you I would bring it up again with your surgeon. Congrats on getting everything started!!!!!

that's what i had thought, also (re: lapband), but as long as the procedure is done by a military surgeon, it is covered. the only time it is not covered is with civilian surgeons. i am having my procedure done at walter reed.

Ha! I was going to say Tricare doesn't cover Lap-Band, but I've heard of Walter Reed doing it. Either surgery can be successful, I think it really matters which one will fit you best. I chose RNY not because Tricare covered it (if I felt a different surgery would have been best for me I would have paid out of pocket) but because after all my research, it sounded like it would fit me best. I am a carb-oholic and having the Lap-Band I'd still be able to have those carbs. I believe this would have sabotaged my efforts. But for someone who eats healthy, but just in larger amounts the Lap-Band would be a great match. The RNY would help me learn how to control my carbs, how much to eat, and to slow down while I eat. And so far so good! Really you'll have to assess what kind of eater you are. Do you eat a lot of carbs? Or do you just consume large portions? Do your research and discuss it with your surgeon and Have a Great WLS Journey!! Andi

Congrats on your good consult! I prefer Lap Band if I had a choice, because its reversible and less drastic. But YOU will have to decide which is best for you!
