Hair Loss

I have a question about hair loss. How many people who have had WLS have lost their hair? I have been hearing that after having WLS, your hair starts shedding. If you have experienced it, can you let me know? How much hair did you lose and for how long? I have not had my surgery yet, but I am concerned about it.

I have not had the surgery yet; but like you I am freaked out by the idea of loosing alot of hair. I have hypothyrodism and I loose alot of hair anyway. I found a myspace link for Big Medicine...it's the tv show that comes on TLC about two doctors that perform gastric bypasses.(They are father and son) I wrote Garth about the hair loss question and I have copied the answer he emailed me. Maybe it will be some help to you. The hair loss is not major and always comes back. Proteina and flax seed oil help. Take care, Garth ----------------- Original Message ----------------- From: Jaye Jaye Date: Jul 15, 2007 2:04 PM

Im on another WLS group on yahoo and they said that protein, protein, protein, they said to always try to get in at least 30g of protein per day so the hairloss wont be as bad, I lose a lot of hair already also because of hypothyroidism so i worry about the hairloss thing also, I used to have really thick hair now I dont Hugssssssss Donna

I started losing hair at 2 and a half months out, now I have very thick hair and naturally curly so I didnt worry to much about it. BUT when it starts happening, the amount that comes out in your hands like when your shampooing or brushing is alarming, its truly kind of scary looking to me anyway. So far you cant tell it when you look at me but it is scary. What worries me more is the condition of my hair, i dont use any new products on it or anything but it just looks like a big dead fuzzy sheeps butt on top of my head and I cant get it to style or anything anymore. Ive thought about cutting it off short but im afraid with the hair loss that would be more noticeable. I just dont know what to do. I have always been faithful with my protien to. I believe its a natural process we all go through at varying degrees with this surgery, but it sucks!!

I have lost hair after every baby and serious illness. It comes back. There is a lot of advise around about getting your protein in as soon as possible and taking Biotin. there might be one other nutrient. Someone might can fill us in a little more. when your body is really stressed it shuts down some things. One is nail and hair growth. So, the hair folicles that are in active growth at that time stop. It takes about 3 months for that to fall out. Then it comes in and you will see it when you have all this short hair sticking up among all the longer hair. My hair is straight as a stick and fine as silk (yuk, I can't do much with it and clips and barrets just fall right out) So, when it comes back in I can see all these little hairs sticking straight up above the rest of my hair. You will generally lose no more than 1/3rd of your hair. I really don't care if I go bald, as long as I lose the weight. I know the hair will come back. Diana
