Red flags have popped up after my most recent conversation with Bill at Baja Bariatrics this afternoon. He raised his voice and spoke over me with threats to cancel my surgery after asking him for a general timeline of the 4 days in Tijuana... this, after I made a $500 deposit. He led me to believe that it is only through him that I can be treated by Dr. Illan. Is that true? He said that no one has ever asked for that information in the 4 years he's been coordinating these surgeries. Really? I told him that it's a reasonable request being as I'm spending $4600 (the new price) out of pocket. Is there a way to circumvent these people and work directly with Dr. Illan or the hospital? I can book my own hotel and drive myself to the hospital in TJ. Please advise.
Thank you so very much Tvan V. I feel the same way about the 4 day hospital stay and I read very good reviews on his staff and the hospital. I have already sent in my deposit and know in my heart that I made the correct selection. The people on this site were extremely helpful to me in this very important decision making process. I am so grateful to have found you all! :) and no... I'm not from Texas!
I was a voluntary self-pay who was fortunate enough to afford any doctor, even in the U.S. I did tons and tons of research and narrowed my choices to a surgeon in California, one in Washington, and Dr. Esquerra. I did even more research, and found that while all the surgeons got great reviews, only Dr. Esquerra' support staff got as high of praise from patients as he did. I also liked that he kept his patients in the hospital four days and did three leak tests. I then researched Almater Hospital, the private hospital he uses for his patients, and it also got excellent reviews. I decided to go with him, and my personal experience was fantastic. It met or exceeded all my expectations, and I am a person who is particular about customer service. I cannot recommend him and his staff enough. If I had it to do all over again, I wouldn't change a thing.
On that other site, the owner of the site would censure any mention of the 2 Tijuana-based surgeons that are members of the ASMBS (Dr. Ramos Kelly & Dr. Ariel Ortiz); instead, only mentions of Dr. Illian were allowed in that thread. Not good, imo. So I would encourage you to do thorough research on each surgeon, don't ignore concerns you may have, and don't make price the key factor in your final decision. For me, working with a WLS team that does less than 5 surgeries a day was important as I didn't want assembly line surgery.

I emailed once and got a reply in video from Dr. A. They send you emails once per week for the first month to tell you what to expect in the next week.
I just left Dr Q and his Pompeii Surgical facility today - and I cannot speak highly enough of Dr Q and his staff - so glad I booked with Pompeii - if I had to do it again I would (but so glad I don't have too!!)
Looking to book with Dr. Illan in the fall. Really like him so far and everything I have read about him, but not loving the coordinator that much or Alex, the owner of Bariatric Pal MX. Looking for recent reviews. Thanks!
I did not experience a leak after my MGB surgery in Mexico. I was operated on by a highly skilled bariatric surgeon who is a member of the ASMBS.
