hi all! first of all, just wanna give an update--- i'm still doing really well. feeling better every day. this week i started my soft food, and those seem to give me more energy. (i never knew i liked cottage cheese so much, but it's been like a "power food" for me!). i've lost about 20 pounds in 3 weeks (i cheated on my pre op diet, so i didn't lose any before surgery). so far, no food has really upset me until tonight when i ate a few bites of scrambled eggs and didn't chew them enough, or something. they felt like they were "stuck" somewhere between my throat and stomach. ick! i waited it out, and sure enough, it went away after 15 minutes or so. anywho----back to my question: should we be taking antacids each day, even if we're not experiencing heartburn, etc.? someone told me that our stomach acid is so strong in our new little pouch that it can erode the lining easily and cause ulcers, etc., that MAY need to be operated on. scary, huh? does anyone know anything about this? just want to prevent future problems, if i can. take care everyone!

Many US WLS programs have their patients take pepcid or zantac for several months after surgery. I have had to go on it because I developed an ulcer early post-op. You do not have much acid in your new pouch. But I get food stuck in my esophagus all the time, leading to ulcers. If you start having pain in your pouch, it can be an ulcer. Over the counter pepcid and zantac are not contraindicated in WLS patients, so don't be afraid of taking them. I now take it everyday. Costco sell 150 zantac tabs for like $6. Bonnie
