Well, after months of grueling and heart breaking research...I have come to the conclusion that my only hope of having surgery (RNY) is to go to Mexico. I need all the info I can get on surgeons in Monterrey. I will have to travel by ground as my husband refuses to fly. Help!!!! victoria Kelsay missouri

Dr. Rumbaut did my surgery. He is based in Monterrey, Mexico. I've had no complications and lost 86 pounds since July 13th. To read more about it, go see my profile. -Pam

Hi, I had Lap Band on Nov. 20th by Dr. Sanchez in monterrey. Check him and his team out on Ready4achange.com He is the greatest as far as I am concerned. I would chose Lap band due to smaller likelihood of serious complications. My daughter had RNY in the states 3 years ago and almost died this past Aug. due to an indirect complication resulting in severe intestinal blockage. Her surgeon is a great guy and excellent surgeon but the operation is very risky, despite what many tell you. Do some research on this and other boards regarding the number of blockages that result from intestinal surgeries. I am very subjective in my opinions and with good reason. If you want more info feel free to email me and I will give you all the details on my daughters problems. At this time she was in the hospital 68 days out for 3 weeks and in for two more weeks. Her life has been shattered. The lap band has some great results with minimal risks. Always possibility of some, but most are not deadly. Take care, Corliss

Thanks so much for your help, I am not a candidate for banding due to long time history of severe GERD requiring meds. I am also told by two physicians that my particular eating habits (eat most of day/between meals and having a real sweet tooth) are best treated with RNY. I should also say that both of the physicians who told me that RNY was best for me, also perform the lap band. I certainly realize the risks and as a critical care nurse, I feel like I've done my homework. For me (I have severe hypertension) not treating the obesity effectively is much more dangerous. There is a large incidence of severe heart disease in my family and of diabetes, I feel this is a matter of life and death for me. I do want to hear all stories, though.....the good the bad AND the ugly! Thank you so much for your input. Hopefully, I'll get a good sampling of several doctors in the Monterrey area and then work from there. I'm already looking into recommendations for health care by the US Consulate and I have a colleague that sells travelers insurance and has a lot of dealings with health care in Mexico. I still believe that the best place to start is with current and former patients.

Hi Victoria! I, too, am a nurse here in the states. I took care of hundreds of RNY patients at our local hospital and the risks and complications scared me away from having RNY for 7 years! I finally came to the realization that it WAS the best option for me and went for it. I chose Dr. Rumbaut in Monterrey, the best decision I ever made. Many people will give you their opinions about having surgery in Mexico, I'm sure you've already experienced some of it. You will not be having surgery in an alley behind a tortilla factory! The hospital San Jose is immaculate and top notch compared to what we have available here in Vermont! Dr. Rumbaut is an excellent surgeon, you will be in good hands with him. You can go and see someone else in Tijuana for half of the price, but with Dr. R you will have a laproscopic procedure, no funky drainage tubes or anything weird like that. He is totally worth the extra money! Good luck in your search! Bonnie

Hi Victoria, I did my homework and chose Dr. Rumbaut to do my lapband. He is an excellent laproscopic doctor and you would be most impressed by Dr. R., his surgical team, the hospital and the hotel. I can not compare the two surgeries, but I do know that I went to one of the best, most best laproscopic surgeons in the world and highly respected by both patients and peers. If I had chosen to have the RNY, he would have been the doctor to do it! While I was having my surgery, there was another woman there that was a nurse having the band. There seems to be a lot of medical professionals that go to Dr. Rumbaut for WLS for both the band and RNY. Let me know if you have any questions that I can try to answer for you about my experience or check my profile. Peace, Ally Kansas! 305/242/the best I can be -63# Dr. Rumbaut 9.15.05
