Going to Mexico Alone.
Sandy Brown,
The original post asked a question wanting opinions and I answered with my opinion. Everyone can do whatever they are comfortable with. I stand by my original feelings that "I" am glad I didn't go alone.
Secondly, I am a Family Nurse Practitioner and I teach nursing as well. I understand English very well and I was told by Dr. Joya and Nathalie to drink Ensure. I really don't care what you believe. You are defending a doctor you don't really know. You can try to turn this into something about me, but I am the one that had p.o. fluids draining out a hole in my side while Dr Joya is telling to to keep drinking (causing me to develop an infection).
I do want people to be informed before going to him in Mexico. I will share my story and then people can make their own decisions. If a million people want to have surgery by him that is fine with me. I liked Dr Joya and his team as people, but this isn't about how nice they are.
I think you need to refrain from saying people are liars when you have NO idea what you are talking about. I will wait for the board to delete my post like they do when someone says something critical about a doctor.
Good night.

I think your comments are lies... our patient handbook written by the doctor specifically says not to drink Ensure... Yet you claim that he told you to drink Ensure. That sounds crazy, did you bother to read the handbook? Did you do any research prior to your surgery about what you can and can not have after a surgery? You had a problems with your surgery, but you never contacted our office and you did not even see a local doctor until your problems increased. Not only that you threatened and blackmailed Dr. Joya via e-mail, if he did not give you your money back to make these false claims and lies and try to hurt his reputation (I have the e-mails you sent making such claims). None of which truly matters as Dr. Joya is one of Mexico's top surgeons, and yes you had a problem, but never let us try to fix it. Had you done so your medical expenses would have been much less and you would be much better off. Go ahead and keep on badmouthing Dr. Joya and our office, as we have so many happy and satisfied patients that your blackmail will not work. Yes you are attempting to make us look bad, but overall we are one of Mexico's finest doctors and provide top notch care both preop, while you are here and post op. I think you should do some soul searching and consider your actions. Your lies are unwarranted and you truly do know what happened and the truth of the matter, however false you may want to present it.
Mr. S
I do not know where you are going or your surgeon, but I think you will be ok. I saw Dr. Rumbaut in Monterrey and just about everything was taken care of for me. I was shuttled in the van to the docs appts and back and forth to the hospital. It was nice to have my husband there, but I truly would have been ok without him. But I am used to taking care of myself when I do not feel well, my husband is scared of hospitals and sick people, and at home he does not "take care" of me either, so I'm used to it. You will be ok though! I wish you the best!
As for the ensure thing, I was NEVER, EVER told to drink ensure. I just took out my papers from Dr. Rumbaut and it DOES NOT say ensure anywhere! Plus I knew that anyway because I did research before surgery and knew what to eat/drink before I even had a consultation.
To anyone reading this who is pre-op: YOU NEED TO BE PREPARED FOR WLS SURGERY, THIS IS YOUR RESPONSIBILITY! It is not up to the doc, in the US or Mexico to make sure you understand everything, sure it's their job to educate you about your choices, etc, but it the ultimate responsibility of the patient to know what you are signing up for. Way too many people are blaming the surgeon because of post-op complications or that they are not happy with the results of surgery. You all need to know that the majority of RNY surgeries lose 80% of their excess boy weight, not all of it. That there are post op complications and that they can happen to you. Everyone undergoing surgery says the same things, "yeah, I understand that 2% of patients die with WLS, but I won't be that 2%" STOP KIDDING YOURSELVES< IT CAN BE YOU!
Hi Mr. S, I went alone and had the RNY. My family was also restricted by the high cost of companion airfare. It was a little scary going it alone but depending on what doctor you have (I had Dr. Joya) they take very good care of you. I was lucky enough to hook up with another person who was having the surgery the day before me and we got to know each other via email before the surgery. Then when we were there we spoke in the hospital and even shared a hotel room. It sure did help with the homesickness and feeling of being alone!
Hope that helps
Kim
I came alone for surgery this past Tuesday. I have not had any problems. The hotels, staff and drivers are very familiar with english speaking customers so you shouldn´t have any problems.
In fact, I just left a restaurant where the waitress was practicing her english and I practiced my spanish. We exchanged information so that when I come back for a fill we can try to get together.
