Uninsured in Mexico

I know a lot of people go to Mexico because their insurance won't pay. But did anyone ever go when they had no insurance at all? I am in graduate school and have the money for the surgery but I'm wondering about after care when I get home and concerned if I have a complication. Can anyone share their experience with this? I'm fairly healthy (no diabetes, high blood pressure, etc) and exercise regularly. But I'm afraid if something went wrong I'd be screwed without insurance. But then again, it's almost worth the risk to me just to get on with my life without being fat. Please feel free to comment. Thanks!

I had insurance but it didn't cover the surgery nor did it cover anything related to the surgery therefore none of my aftercare was covered once I got home for anything including just regular blood tests... I think if you had some major problems when you got back you can go to the emergency room of any hospital. They offer financial aide to those who don't have insurance and sometimes pick up the bill if you are unable to pay. I wish I didn't have any at all sometimes I would have been better off but I have had no complications to speak of... Dr aguirre is a great doctor and does great work. I wouldn't worry... But it's good that you are asking questions.. Hugs Cindy

Donna, My situation is the same as Cindy's. I had insurance but it wouldn't cover the surgery or anything related to the surgery afterwards. I went to Mexico with Dr. Aguirre and have never regretted it. If something comes up down the road, then I will just have to deal with it. I was more afraid of not having the surgery than of anything that went along with it. I had lots of comorbidities and really didn't think I would be around more than 2-3 years without it. It bites that the insurance would pay for my diabetes for years and years and even a stroke that required thousands of dollars or even a nursing home, but not the surgery! But, that said, you will have to decide for yourself about the risks. For me, I made the right decision! I feel better than I have in 20 years! It has been 5 months and I am down 68 pounds! I didn't know insurance wouldn't pay for anything afterward. That makes the decision a lot easier since I'd be "screwed" anyway. Thanks for the encouragement. It makes things a lot better to have you all!

My stupid insurance company that does not cover WLS paid for the visits to see a nutritionist and the surgeon (over $500) to talk about WLS but wouldn't pay the $89 to see my PCP after I came home! Idiots! Now my doc just makes sure he puts other diagnoses such as diabetes and obesity in addition to WLS on the charge ticket so they have to pay for it! All we have to do is spend 2 minutes talking about my diabetes and blood sugars in order to make it all legit! Insurance companies are so dumb! If they realized how much they were saving for just me in reduced doctor visits and reduced medication costs, you'd think they'd want to pay for WLS!
