OK here another question for y'all

I have my date!!!!! I have the funds!!!!!! Now what about transportation? Anybody drive? My insuranse doesn't cover my vehicle. Curious to know what y'all have done in regards to this issue. Thanx, Richard

Hi Richard My husband and I drove down to Mexico from Arizona in Feb. of this year. We had no problems going in or out of the boarder. We were able to get out and do some site seeing while there. I got my insurance online at drivemex.com. The cost is based on how long you will be in Mexico and value of your car.. It cost us 125.00 for 9 days. The drive in from San Diego is pretty simple. You will go through 3 toll gates that charge $2.50 each, and they take american money. Good Luck, and congradulations on getting a date and the money.. You made a good choice going to Dr. Aguirre.. My husband and I flew into San Diego, and Bambi picked us up. When we went down the escalators to the baggage claim, he was there holding a sign with my name on it. He carried the bags and did everything. When going back to the airport, he knew exactly where to park by the curb so that we were let off right where we needed to be. We walked in the door, and there was our ticket counter! He was the best! I would definitely recommend Bambi! Something else to think about if you are driving: gas here is already $2.20 a gallon. Supposed to be $3.00 a gallon by the summer! Genie

Considered posting a new topic on this, but figured I'd reply here and hope everyone reads it. I highly recommend not taking your own vehicle to Mexico, at least not when you are going down for surgery. There are things that can be overwhelming to deal with, one being what happens if your car is stolen. I work for the State Police and a couple months ago we got a call from someone down in Mexico who wanted to report that their car was stolen from Mexico. We cannot take a report when the theft occurred outside our jurisdiction, much less, Mexico. They were trying to get the Mexican authorities to take the report, but they refused and told this person they needed to report it to us. The insurance refused to pay and said that they needed a report. Well, Mexico police wouldn't do a report and we could not because it was not in our jurisdiction (or our country for that matter), so the last I knew they got no resolution. I don't know where exactly they were in Mexico and I don't know more than that, but after having gone down there myself to see Dr. Aguirre, I am thankful I decided to fly and use Bamby. I cannot imagine going down there and having surgery only to find out that my car had been stolen and I had no form of transportation and no way to get resolution with my insurance company. Just a few words of advice. Good idea to make it as easy on yourself as you can. And also, if you were thinking of driving yourself, that is really not a good idea anyway. You may be okay for regular driving, but having to jerk the wheel quickly or react quickly can be dangerous for you. Dina

Hi there To go along with the warning above, I would also like to mention that while we were there, we saw about 3 instances where people would park about 6" from the car next to them (side by side front end parking). There would be absolutely no way for someone to get into their vehicle once they returned from running their errands. While waiting at the pharmacy one day, our taxi driver Carlos and my husband were inside the store and a car pulled up next to us (probably about 10" away). He pulled out when he saw me staring in amazement at him. But then within minutes, another car pulled up on the right side...he had plenty of room, probably about 2 feet...and he swung open his door and just dented the crap out of the side of the taxi. Looked at me and smiled and then walked into the pharmacy. Also, when we were driving to La Bufadora, we witnessed a fender bender between a beater car and a very nice Ford Expedition....they didn't even stop their vehicles, both just kept going. I just got the impression that a dent or ding to a vehicle isn't that big of a deal down there. But we did the taxi route, so this is just what we witnessed.

Hi Richard--I am going with Bambi (arrange through Rosella at Dr. A's), at $350 roundtrip. Was going to do US bus to border and then Mexican bus to Ensenada to save money. But I read a couple of people's postings about 3-4 flights of stairs while carrying all your luggage. I have both knees needing replacements and that was just not an option...but might be for you and save you money too. You'll figure it out! And this wonderful gang is always there with info! My sister and I flew into San Diego and then rented a car at Budget. I had searched the web and, at that time, got a special internet deal. The car cost us $175 for the week and that included full insurance covering us in Mexico. We did return it before the week because we didn't stay in Ensenada the entire week but the price was still very, very reasonable. We also did the sight-seeing thing. I will say that I had been in Mexico several times before so I was somewhat used to the driving situation. Cultural shock does come into play when you drive down there!
