Help need info
Hi I am very new in this and have been researching a a while now. I have been researching a few doctors in Mexico because i will be self pay. The prices a not so expensive which I do like. But on the other hand it kinda scares me that why not? The thing is that I don't even really know where to start. I have been thinking about doctors in Mex but also been thinking is it or would it be better here in the states.. I have read a lot of good posts about mex so could anybody give me any info about your experience in Mexico and or here.. Let me know which doctor you used and why you choose to go with him or her.And tell me a little on the pain after words and the experience on the before and after liquid diet..
Researching surgeons can be challenging, but just remember all of this happens on your time and no one else, so don't feel rushed to make a decision. Take you time, do good research and choose a doctor that fits your specific needs. As for the price, you have to remember it is cheaper because you are going to a country with a completely different economy. Down there minimum wage is 5 dollars a day, 12 hour shifts, working 6 days a week. Base salaries are like 1500 pesos a week, which is under 100 USD. While your nurses in the States make 35 dollars and hour, you nurses in Mexico make 35 dollars a day for doing the exact same work. There are a number of factors that go into that lower price point, but they don't mean a lesser standard of care.
I have been down there for a number of procedures over the last few years and received excellent care every time. I am sure there are a number of people who believe that you can't get the same, but actually because medical tourism is such a booster for the local economy they actually have additional regulators and stipulations because they don't want people traveling down there and having bad experiences, because for that country it would kill off huge revenue stream that they depend on.
I researched a year before making my decision on Dr. Quinones. There are a number of reasons that I chose him in the end. He was proctor certified, was the chief of general surgery at Tijuana general, he held a position on the Mexican Surgical Arbitration board, spent for years training as a trauma surgeon, and is also a bariatrics professor at the Medical college, so he has taught many many doctors how to perform these procedure. I just felt his experience level far surpassed the rest in my book.
As for the pain, my surgery was a breeze, by 3 days out I barely felt like I had just had major surgery. By the time I got back to the states I felt good enough to drive an hour to a local casino and play, and by the time I got back home (5 days out from surgery) I went right back to work and taking care of my toddler. In all honestly, I have had tooth extractions that hurt worse than my gastric sleeve surgery. I have some informational posts that I have made that suggest tips for research and questions to ask. I will look them up and post them here so that you can give them a read. Maybe they will help you get started. Best of luck!
Thanks for that post it does help a lot I like the fact that you talk about the pain because that is definite fear for me.I probably watch to much youtube videos, but I also get a lot of info with the youtube videos the procedures are very interesting to me. I like to know what they will be doing to me if I decide this is the best for me. It is hell being 237 and not being able to play with my kids in the playground. That is why I'm really looking into this. For me it is heartbreaking when my kids want me to play ball or jump up and down with them I just cant do. I do not want to miss the best years of their life because of my weight when I know that their are a lot of different things I could do to help myself.
My son was a big reason that I had my surgery done. At 235 lbs I couldn't keep up with him. I was so sick of having to sit on the sidelines of my child's life. I am thankful for many things this surgery has done for me, but there are no words to describe what Dr. Quinones and his team gave me back when it comes to my life with my son. I made a video for his 4th birthday to show my progress since having surgery. Bare in mind my son was a little over one when I had surgery, but to me the difference is amazing. Check it out, I am still amazed at how much my body changed since having surgery, and the energy level that I have for my son now, man, nothing can replace that. Best decision I have every made.
I had surgery with Dr. Fernando Garcia. While you should definitely find someone in the states willing to provide after care for someone that had surgery in Mexico if you were to choose Dr. Garcia, I would definitely recommend him. My scarring is minimal and I'm 107lbs lighter since last year when I had the surgery (10/6/14 was my surgery date). All in all I think he did an excellent job for the price I paid.
Every time I see this kind of post, about people asking about our experience I always think how great experience I had, and how proud I feel about by myself because I DID IT!
I went with Dr Camelo Ramos, and everything was great!! I was there in July and almost 70 pounds ligther!
I choose him because a friend had it done with him and saw results, and about pain it was tough the first hours but after walking and walking felt a lot better...and when they took my drain out it was gone!!
About my experience I must tell you..that I felt very well cared and pampered, Dr Camelo came to visit a few times and Dr Reyna too, my coordinator was there most of the time or just a call away..love the nurses, even the cleaninig lady was wonderfull!!
I wont lieto you...I WAS REALLY SCARED at the beggining but after A LOT LOT LOT of phone calls with my coordinator ( Veronica) and zillion questions and responses I started to feel more comfortable with my decision!!
I hope this helps you, its really important that you feel confidence with the people that is helping you during this process, if you don´t feel it, look for some body else...good luck on you research !!
Don´t go for the most popular Dr, they have like 8 or 10 surgeries a day...( something that I learned on the process)
Something else...lot of people complains about no follow ups...I do get follow up, I keep in touch with them and they always answer my emails!!
DO YOU PREOP DIET!!!!
Sorry for no answer you more faster the thing is I work every day two jobs and go home and do my chores at home so I get pretty tired. Thanks so much fore caring. Cant wait to met Dr,Quinones becuase he will be the doctor that will change my life fore every.
