OMG I cant decide on a Dr!

I have been researching VSG for nearly a year now. I have read so many blogs, forums, viewed you tube videos, enough so that I've learned there are actually some really good doctors in Mexico. So why cant I select one? I am leaning on choosing Dr. Ponce or Dr. A. Ortiz. The American doctors tell me to make sure they are registered with the American Surgeons... which is Dr. Ramos-Kelly, but i had heard some recent negative stuff on him and from what i can tell, greed is getting the best of him (MY OPINION SOLELY- PLEASE - I could be totally off base by that statement but he moves around a lot - so do some others - why is that?). To me it is very important to have an excellent patient coordinator. Who Dr. Ponce I know for a fact has. I have a friend who had her and she was excellent - helping her through-out the whole ordeal, start to finish and beyond. It appears to me Dr. O has less experience that Ponce (can i say that here?) because of the risks, of course like everyone else I want the most qualified experienced medical staff working on me! (I know im greedy now:)). Any thoughts and comments advice and help, I'm all ears. Thank you.

I went to Dr. Kelly in Nov.2012. I went directly through his office and met his coordinator when we arrived. I had an excellent experience. He is an excellent surgeon. Very caring and easy to understand. He was born and worked in the US. He speaks perfect English. His staff treated us like gold. he has changed hospitals but the ones he chooses are good.I really don't know why they change but I know at the hospital I was at he had one wing and we had to pay part of our fee to the hospital and the rest to Dr. Kelly so I'm assuming it depends which hospital has more space.

If you have any questions please message me. You won't be disappointed if you choose him.    Linda

I used Dr. Kelly recently and had a great experience! The reason I chose him was because two people I know personally used him (as well as several people from their church) and ALL had great results! I can't imagine what anyone would say negative about him because he was great! I wrote a very lengthy (and honest) review of my entire experience. Feel free to read it and ask questions if you like. I work in healthcare in US and wouldn't consider anyone who isn't ASBMS certified, I don't care how nice they are. Good luck making your decision.

Thank you. I also had a friend use Dr. Ramos, great results, no problem. She said go to the hospital though, the clinic is primitive. This was last year. Now I'm ready, but heard Dr. Ramos may have some other issues going on, so that worries me. Plus his patient coordinator isn't very good. And you know that a bad patient coordinator can make or break the doctors success. Thanks again.

I immediately heard from Dr. Ramos-Kelly patient coordinator. Dr. Ramos-Kelly has been out of town in the States actually at a medical conference. His patient coordinator and I talked and I have to say, I was so glad she called me, she was so nice and apologetic of our miscommunication. I even got to speak to Dr. Ramos-kelly, and he allayed any fears i had. You see, I knew Dr. Ramos-Kelly was the right doctor for me all along. Like i said in an earlier post, i have friends who have gone to him for VSG and they had no complaints what so ever AND their surgeries were very successful! I have been researching for over a year on doctors in Mexico, The only doctor that i found to be the most experienced was Dr. Ramos-Kelly. In fact some of the doctors who have websites saying they are the best, I didn't even see their names in my research last year so please be careful on who you choose. The only name that keeps coming up for me in my research is Dr. Ramos-Kelly. I am so grateful that they called me immediately, addressed my concerns, and I am ready!! Those other "bad" things i heard  which i didn't list because I really had a hard time believing it, and i was right - so not true anyway. In fact i feel bad about mentioning it. I could have deleted my previous post but i decided not to but instead explain it for those who may have seen it already.  I will post back here after my surgery with Dr. Ramos-Kelly. Also just so you know those who are still afraid and doing more research, Dr. Ramos-Kelly did speak very highly of Dr. Ponce which in itself displays a great deal of professionalism, it actually surprised me to hear him say such good things, but again I am going to rely on my extensive research and go with Dr. K (I hope he doesnt mind me calling him that:).

Dr. Ramos-Kelly was on my short list of 4 surgeons when I was researching in case I lost the battle with the insurance company.  I didn't read anything bad about him other than using different hospitals.  But than my PS here in the states, along with several surgeons, use three different hospital systems.  I feel it is say alot of them that they can have privileges at several hospitals.  The PS can go to all three of the big ones here but, did my ps at the one that would give him a set fee so his patients don't get hit with extra charges after the fact.

You should check out Dr. Sergio Quinones, I had surgery with him in 2012, he was awesome. He is proctor certified and actually teaches bariatric procedures at the medical college. He has taught many of the top surgeons in MX. He speaks perfect English and his beside manner is just fantastic, he really cares about his patients. He has also been a guest speaker at a number of US bariatric conferences. You can check out his credentials on his website.  Sorry if I sound like a billboard for him, but I put in a lot of time researching MX doctors before my surgery, and I couldn't be happier with my experience with him. The Santa Fe coordinators are awesome, they help you both preop and postop with pretty much everything. The post op diet coordinator, Stacy, has also had surgery with Santa Fe medical group, so I really like the fact that she can speak as both a coordinator and a patient, it's really great to have help from someone that can identify first hand what you are experiencing. As far as your question about the doctors who move around a lot, that really has nothing to do with the quality of surgeon. The reason you see that on some doctors is that a lot of MX doctors work more like independent contractors for various companies. In other words they are not contracted solely to work from a particular hospital. Instead, they are on staff and multiple locations, and when those locations book a surgery they show up to perform the procedure. If you choose to go with a doctor that does that then just make sure to verify where you will be having surgery, and research that facility.  Not all doctors in MX do the multi location thing though. If you have and questions about my experience, or are interested in Dr. quinones feel free to pm me I would be happy to answers questions, or send you the Santa Fe Medical Group website, I just don't think we are allowed to post any outside website links on the public forum topics. Best of luck on your research, there are many great doctors in MX, I wish you the best on your surgery.
