I am leaving / having surgery on Tuesday Sept. 3rd with Dr. Kelly.

Omg. I'm so nervous and excited but definately having some second thoughts .

I've done so well this week on the liquid diet that I'm wondering if I really need the surgery or could I keep a modified protien mostly/ low or no carb diet and exercise on my own.

Since I'm self pay, I didn't do a Dr. supervised weight loss plan or see a nutritionist.

Maybe that's all I need.
My BMI is about 35 after the liquid diet was 37 or 38 and that's after only 2 weeks.

The hard part isn't going on a diet, it's staying on a diet.  I know I can't follow this type of diet long term.  This is a guess, but you've probably tried dieting before and gained the weight back, or you wouldn't have decided to get the surgery in the first place.  Good luck with your sugery.

So, most of my life growing up I was at a good weight. In my field of sport, I was considered chubby. Especially standing next to girls I participated in competitive gymnastics with. I even trained with Bela Karolyi. I was the big girl in the team pictures.

I injured my ankle in my junior year in high school training for a competition. I could not train for 6-8 months. I gained about 25 pounds. I re-injured myself 2 weeks after coming back. I had to get ankle fusion surgery and pins in my leg and ankle joint. I had to leave gymnastics all

together. My senior year in high school I gained even more weight maybe 15 more pounds. So at this point I was 5'2 and 130/ 140.

In college I lost my way and thought that if I did drugs I could lose the weight.I

stared out with cocaine and then switched to speed.

I did lose weight, a lot of it. But, I lost a lot more too. Friendships and relationships with family, my moral standards, money, jobs, my mind (at times), got some bad grades killing my scores for law school. Basically.... everything. I was 100 pounds and miserable and also an addict. My parents staged an intervention. I didn't go to treatment but I moved home with them, got refocused on school, my morals, my community reconnected with friends and started swimming and yoga.

I maintained my weight at 120lbs from the age of 21 to 26.

At 23yrs. old I started dating my husband. We knew each other from 8 yrs old. I got pregnant with my first at 25 and delivered our son on Aug.26. 2006. During my pregnancy I had gestational diabetes, so I was on a high protein low carb diet for 9 months with no problems.

I'm wondering if I only maintained such a diet because of the extreme pressure of having a healthy child or could I be disciplined enough to do it for myself? I think I am....I actually did this diet twice with both my pregnancies. I had preclampsia with both my pregnancies as well so I was swollen for about 6 months. I also had c-sections with each. And was off the diet...'laid up and eating every carb I could get. With each pregnancy I retained 30+ lbs. Its been 2 years since delivering my last child.

But I have actually not tried dieting. I have exersized at the gym but lose a few pounds which I yoyo with. But as I've said I lost 14 pounds in 2 weeks now I am at around 185/ 190.

Maybe I should have tried the low carb diet again. I never saw results because I was pregnant and right after had preclampsia-- swelling and water retention.

So, to make a long story even longer...I really never tried the diet thing.

I am just overweight and have been depressed about it for 2 years now.

But now that my surgery date is tomorrow. I'm freaking out thinking I should have tried a serious go at a diet or seen a nutritionist.

Did you end up going through with your surgery?  I just saw this thread and was curious.

Hey, Bella Italiana
I'm here at Nova hospital. I did go through with the surgery. Dr. Kelly is an amazing surgeon. The care here at the hospital is great.
He congradulated me on sticking to the preop diet so well.
The gal that he operated on a day before me didn't do as well in recovery. She told me she didn't follow the diet and Dr. Kelly could tell.
My sleeve is a perfect up and down and the incisions are tiny.
I had a some nausea last night because of the contrast dye in my stomache from the leak test but threw it up around 9hrs after surgery. I felt wayyy better after that.
I was up and walking around within 2 hours after waking from surgery.
I didn't need a drain which I'm happy about.
I have some minor gas which I'm taking gasx dissolvable strips and walking around to expel. I have my leak test tomorrow and then I'll be discharged from hospital (if all is well) to the hotel Lucerna.
I'm ordering the bone marrow broth from the restaurant across the street.
So far all I've had to put in my mouth are a few ice chips, but I really have no hunger.
Thanks for asking.
Its really cathardic to post of my experience and feel at peace with the decision I made to have it done.
I was really considering cancelling it.
Thanks for the interest.

I'm glad to hear your surgery went well.  I was also wondering if you were going to go through with it or try doing the high protein diet on your own.

Very glad to hear you're doing so well!  Make sure to take it easy the first few days, your body's got alot of healing to do.  Hope you continue to have a smooth recovery!
