JUST CURIOUS. WHY SO MANY VSGs AND SO FEW RNYs DONE IN MEXICO?

I have noticed that there are more VSGs then RNYs here on the Mexico  board., Why so few RNYs here? Isn't RNY popular in Mexico? Just curious.

RNY is a slightly more complicated surgery. I dont know people who had RNY in Mexico but I know people who had the DS in Mexico and things turned out fine. However, both DS and RNY are complicated surgeries. The VSG is far less likely to have complications, and it is the cheaper option generally. That is just my understanding behind it all. RNY and DS both have high risks, a bit of a longer recovery time, ect.

On the fence about self-pay options and if Mexico is the right choice (or scared of that option)? Let my experience (first time ever in Mexico) be your guide. Don't let fear hold you back!

On the other forum I actually see a lot of people having those type of surgeries in Mexico.

Thanks so much everyone for replying to my question. Robyn, I am having the RNY revision done in Mexico. I don't know whether to just have the RNY revised and a belt put around the pouch or to go with the duodenal switch. And if I do the ds, I understand that only a few drs. in the world do this. I may be wrong. But that is just what I have seen on the internet. One thing is for sure, I don't want to regain my weight again after 8 years. So whatever will keep the pounds off, that is what I will go for. I cannot afford to regain my weight back.

I did note that your BMI is only 31, yet you are planning on having a revision.  What is your thinking behind this plan.  Just curious.

Our local (USA) bariatric surgeon has only started doing vertical sleeve gastrectomies.  The surgeons in Mexico seem to have been doing them for several years.  I chose vertical sleeve gastrectomy because I knew weight loss would be easier for me if I didn't feel hungry, and I did not feel I needed the malabsorptive component of surgery.  It also was attractive because the risk of nutritional deficiencies and functional problems are less. The surgical complication rate for VSG is also less than Roux-en-Y. Since I was having surgery in Mexico and not close to home, a lower complication risk was a very attractive factor. The fact that vertical sleeve gastrectomy cost about $1500  less was a bonus, but not a deciding factor.

I'm having my band removed and RNY in TJ on Aug 13. I suffer from severe acid reflux and little to no restriction with my band. My surgeon recommend RNY over the sleeve due to my reflux
