Please share your experiences, good and bad. I want to get it done this summer, self--pay. I have to find someone to follow up with back in the states, I live in Connecticut, close to NY.

I went with Dr. Ponce De Leon his coordinators facebook page is WLS for Life and her name is Trish. The whole experience was amazing and the outcome has been super. I know of 8 other people who have travelled from MB Canada and had surgery done by Dr Ponce and all are happy and none have had any complications. I had the VSG and most of the others did as well, but one of the group had the dodennal switch done however that is spelled.

I can't say enough good things about Dr Ponce and his team they were wonderful and kept in touch with me after the surgery via facebook and skype. To this day Trish still keeps in touch with all of us.  Good Luck with your decision.  Lorna

I am about four months post vertical gastric sleeve.  I went through MexicoBariatricCenter and Christy was my coordinator.  Drs. Cabrera and Valenzuela were my surgeons in Tijuana and Dr. Garcia assisted.  Everything went smoothly.  Every question I had was answered quickly and completely.  When my plane was very delayed arrangements were made for me.  I felt great post op.  I had no significant post operative pain, nausea, vomiting or other complications.  I walked several miles the first day I was in the hotel.  I was taken to the Tijuana Marriott after being discharged from the hospital and the accomodations and service there was impeccable.  The hospital was clean and well equipped and the staff was friendly and professional and spoke very good English. They were competatively priced which is a consideration when you are self-pay as I was as well.  Air fare to San Diego was actually less expensive than to the Texas border towns.   I have followed up with my own primary care doctor.   I am very happy with my results and would be happy to comment further on my experience if you have any specific questions.

On the fence about self-pay options and if Mexico is the right choice (or scared of that option)? Let my experience (first time ever in Mexico) be your guide. Don't let fear hold you back!

I had mine done with Dr Kelly. I am 100% satisfied with my surgery and experience that I had down there (I'm two weeks out now).

Dr. Kelly did my DS. I am so glad I went with him. I wasn't compliant with the pre op diet and it made my surgery a lot harder than it should have been. It also made my surgery a lot longer than anticipated. My surgery should have taken 2-2.5 maybe 3 hours, but because I was bad...it took 7 hours. Dr. Kelly not only gave me what I wanted, he didn't make me feel bad for flubbing the diet. He has something like 23 years experience and he specializes in high risk cases.  I went to him through a coordination company, but he no longer works with them.
