So since my insurance turned me down due to my co-morbidities not being serious enough in their opinion, and bmi less than 40, I am self paying for a Mexico VSG. I am scheduled for April 4th., I have not sent in my deposit yet, or reserved a flight, this will all happen Monday after the surgeon approves me. I am going with Dr. Ortiz at Mi Doctors Hospital in Tijuana, Mexico. Anyone use this group, Lopez is the main doctor? Anyone hints or advise for the flight afterwards and preparation before? Anything I should or should not bring with me?

You really won't need much.  Make sure there is a heating pad available to you or bring one along.  That was my best friend the first few days.   Comfy clothes, basic toiletries, slip on shoes.  Fly home first class if you can afford it-- it's totally worth it.

I had several people recommend a heating pad also, which I used for the first few days. However my pain didn't get much better until i switched to an ice pack, so don't be afraid to try both! Also, I would take some saltines. Those really helped my tummy. The tiniest nibbles ever, seemed to get things moving.

Any food in any amount not on your clear liquid diet ups your risk for leaks and complications.

I understand that, but also believe that every person is different, and so is every doctors post-op diet. There is not a set in stone diet and all of these docs have their own opinions.  Listen to your body, and learn what the different post-op diets offer. I've met people who did nothing but liquids and had a leak, and then some who ate right away and didn't.  So, flat statements like that only scare people.  Think outside the box.

UMMM, you better stick with your surgeons recommendations as far as ANYTHING going in your new tummy.  ANything more could do serious damage.

Magazine, book, music, laptop or tablet, comfy roomy clothes, chapstick, slip on shoes or slippers...don't need much else really.

Ask for a copy of the post op diet and shop for it before you leave. Don't buy a tonne of anything (tastes can change) but having what you need for the first few days helps a lot.

If the hospital has wifi and you use an iThing, there's an App called Text+ that allows to to text with friends and family over wifi for free, which makes you feel less isolated and avoids insane data costs.

Take Gas-x strips. They don't have them in Mexico. I found mint the best.

I had Dr. Kelly at The Oasis hospital and everything went great. I'm sure you will do great also.

There were no first class seats back from San Diego to Nova Scotia but I was fine.

Good Luc****ep us posted!
